Nothing is safe around Kristyl Barnette. Windows break. Books rocket across the room. Lights flicker. Strange occurrences follow the sixteen-year-old everywhere.

When tragedy forces her to move to the small town of Clearwater, Michigan, with her estranged aunt Jodi, Kristyl tries to leave her past behind. But Clearwater has secrets of its own—a mystical history that intersects with Kristyl’s life and might shed light on the inexplicable events that plague her.

When a mysterious illness threatens her aunt’s life, Kristyl will do anything to cure her. Enlisting the help of witches could save Jodi, but is dealing in magic worth the consequences?

My Crystal Magic review:

Crystal Magic shows how complicated Kristyl’s life is, both in her school up until her mother passes away, and afterwards. Things do become a little easier once she moves to live with her aunt Jodi to Clearwater, though. She finally gets some friends, and the strange occurrences around her seem to become fewer and farther in between. Kristyl is a sweet girl, a little naive, and very guarded since she’s been bullied since things started shaking around her, and she was able to know other kids’ darkest secrets.

The fact that Kristyl had to move to live with relatives after her mom passed away, and that the founding families of Clearwater seemed to be special in some ways made me think of Vision of Shadows, and while the similarities end there, the feel of the story is ominous, too. Crystal Magic is about how some of the kids Kristyl is staying away from use crystals to do magic, and they see themselves as witches. There is much more to Clearwater than meets the eye, and soon, Kristyl realized that her aunt Jodi had been in a circle of witches when she was younger, too.

There is both a lot of grief, and at the same time strong feelings about new beginnings in Crystal Magic. And I found it interesting to see that the witches thought about crystals to use for their witch-craft, and the way they thought about both energy and how time moves (or doesn’t move). This made it just a little different from other stories I’ve read about magic in the past.

Little by little Kristyl is taken in by the circle, and while she tries to resist, once her aunt gets very ill after what is seemingly a curse, she takes the chance to do something extremely drastic to make sure her aunt will stay alive, so that she won’t end up all alone.  Between this mystery and a very light romance, Crystal Magic is a very compelling story, and I look forward to reading the next book in the Clearwater Witches series – because that ending almost made my eyes pop out of my head!

Some of my favorite Crystal Magic quotes:

My stomach swoops and I take in a sharp breath. My mother is dead. Obviously I know that; I was at the funeral. Still, the thought stabs me just like it did when I first found out.

Something tugs at the back of my mind. I’m not behaving like myself, not in the least. what is it about Fox that’s making me feel so different? Yes, he’s good-looking with his broad shoulders, strong jaw and stormy eyes. But he isn’t the first or only good-looking guy I’ve encountered.

Somehow I’ve been able to convince myself I’m on an extended vacation, or I’ve been sent away to live with my aunt because I’ve caused too much trouble at home.

Thanks for stopping by today! Good luck in the giveaways 🙂

    • I usually enjoy witches, too, Giselle. And it’s even better when the story has a different take on everything 🙂
      Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Crystal Magic has my curiosity piqued, Lexxie. Especially after you referenced Vision of Shadows. 🙂 I’m really interested in all the things that happened around Kristyl (things breaking, etc) and how those things blend in with this new circle of friends who use crystals to do magic. I’m glad you enjoyed this one. 🙂

Happy Thursday, my dear. I have a meeting this morning at the middle school, but maybe I can catch you for a chat when I’m back. Hope you’re enjoying your day! *BIG HUGS*

    • Yeah it did kind of make me think of Vision of Shadows, even if many things are very different 🙂
