Up Close and (un)Conventional #4 – Friends from the Internet
Welcome to this week’s Up Close and (un)Conventional. Today, I want to talk about all the wonderful people we meet online. We have great discussions, we enjoy many of the same things, and we get along very well. I have two reasons that made me want to chat about friends from the internet, one is that BEA was on not long ago, and I know a lot of bloggers who got to meet each other for real for the first time. And I know they were happy about it, excited, and then sad to say goodbye.
Several years ago, during the TV show Lost, I became friends with lots of other fans of the show, and we hung out on one of the messageboards ABC had on their website. We chatted a few times per week, and we got to know each other really well. Then, in September 2009, several of us met for real for the first time. And I got to finally meet Colleen who felt like a sister and a best friend all in one. We had such a great time together, and especially Colleen and I have been keeping in touch ever since. We have gone to Paris together a few times to watch the arrival of the Tour de France, and I have been back to Toronto a few times as well. On Tuesday, she’s coming to visit for a week, and it will be the first time she’ll meet the hubby and the kids.
I think the internet is an awesome invention, because it has made it possible to meet people from all over the world, people I would never had been able to meet without the internet. And I have only had great experiences when meeting people for real. I have to add that I have very high hopes that I’ll be able to meet Brandee of Bookworm Brandee one day. Because we just click, too, and I’m sure we’d have a lot of fun in real life, too.
What about you? Have you became close friends with someone you met on the internet? Have you had the chance to meet for real? If you did, was it as much fun as you had hoped?
Thanks for stopping by today, have a spectacular Sunday.
Great topic. I have some wonderful friendships that have come out of blogging book friends. I met Alison from Alison’s book marks at the expo 5 years ago. Now we meet up every year in New York as well as Kathy, Bermuda Onion, Julie, Booking Mama, Candace Beth Fish Reads and so many more. I love the book relationships!
I love that you have also been friends with some of your blogging friends for several years, Sheila. It’s awesome (and a little scary) to meet in person. I can’t wait to finally make it to BEA so I can meet other bloggers, that’s at least as exciting as meeting authors 🙂
Thanks for stopping by, Sheila!
I bonded with Kara, Jessie, Pixie and Bekka over the time spent in NY. I gained some more friends through BEA, but those girls and I really clicked when we roomed together.
It’s really great that your co-bloggers and you finally got to meet for real, Lyn! I am sure that the blogging from different places must be even more awesome now than it was before you spent time together at BEA.
Thanks for stopping by:)

Great post Lexxie! There’s so many people I’d love to meet in person from the blogosphere. I just met, THIS WEEK, Felicia (The Geeky Blogger’s Book Blog) at a book club – we live in the same area and this was the first chance we had to meet. I would LOVE to meet Michelle (Because Reading) in person – we talk on the phone regularly and I honestly consider her one of my best friends. I think we’re both going to try and do RT next year, so maybe then!
YAY for meeting bloggers, Berls! I think it’s so awesome that the internet has made it possible for us to make friends from all over the world. And it’s much easier to find people who have some of the same hobbies or passions, too 🙂
Thanks for stopping by.
I absolutely LOVE how many people I have met through the internet. I have a lot of bloggers that I have become really good friends with and an author friend that I met on Twitter that ended up living in the same city as I do. We have met several times for lunch and have become really good friends. I want to attend some sort of conference so I can meet more people I know from their blogs or on Twitter. My bookish friends are the best! Thanks for bringing up such a great and happy topic! Have a wonderful day!
Oh, I forgot to mention Katie Hayoz (author of Untethered) who lives in Geneva. We were following each other on Google +, and we’ve had coffee several times.
I’m glad you’ve been able to meet several of your bookish friends, Kristalyn 🙂
Thanks for stopping by.
Ahhh, internet friends are some of the greatest friends ever. I’d made quite a few online prior to blogging when I joined a fan page group for an actor I love. I’m still in touch with some of them too 😀 As for blogging, I’d say it’s where I got in touch with the best internet people. People who love to read and fangirl about the same things I do. Some I chat with daily and I couldn’t imagine my life without them! I wish I could meet them all, especially since a LOT of them are overseas but I’m still hoping we’ll all meet someday hehe Lovely post Lexxie ^^
Why, yes, I have. 😀 A beautiful group of ladies from as far west as Alaska and stretching east over the Atlantic into Europe. Though we don’t chat as much as we used to, I hold them near and dear in my heart. I wouldn’t be reading what I’m reading or blogging without their support. <3 <3
Some I have had the opportunity to see in person a couple of times – it was wonderful both times! I'd still like to meet those that are more scattered.
The internet has been a fabulous invention… how many Aussie friends do you have Lexxie? I know we would’ve found it extremely difficult to meet otherwise!

I’m glad Colleen is coming to visit again, Lexxie! And it’s wonderful she’ll get to meet your family this time. I’m envious 🙂 although I just KNOW we’re gonna meet someday. We do ‘click’ and I’m so thrilled that the internet allowed us to meet virtually, because you’re one of my best friends. 🙂 So maybe next year we’ll meet?!? What do you think? **BIG HUGS** my friend!
There are so many friends I’ve made on the Internet whom I’d love to meet in real life. I hope some day I can. 🙂
