Feature and Follow #51 -Favorite Book with War in it

YAY it’s Friday! Gain new followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature and Follow! If this is your first time here, welcome! You are about to make some new friends and gain new followers — but you have to know — the point of this hop is to follow other bloggers also. I follow you, you follow me.The Feature and Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Rachel of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to meet more new bloggers!

What sets this Hop apart from others, is that our hosts feature two blogs. Every week they will each showcase a Featured Blogger, from all different genres and areas. Just remember it is required, if you participate, to follow both their featured as well as our lovely hosts as a courtesy. How do you follow someone? Well, if you have a preference, state it in your Feature and follow post. I prefer being followed via e-mail, RSS / Bloglovin’ or Google+; or you can like my facebook page, or even follow me on Twitter.

Today is the US’ Independence Day. Share your favorite book with a war in it, or an overthrow of the government.

A Thousand Splendind Suns - (un)Conventional BookviewsI have to go with A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini for today. That book is both beautiful and ugly at the same time. It shows how ugly human beings can behave, but it also shows an uncanny beauty when two unlikely characters decide to join forces to help save each other. The writing is well done, the character development is amazing, and the glimpses into a country, story and lives I could not have visited in any other way made me love it all. I also appreciated how the focus was on the female characters, and how they had no possibility to defend themselves at all. And the need for women to have more power in society is an important message, too.

Here are some quotes for those of you who haven’t read A Thousand Splendid Suns :

Marriage can wait. Education cannot.

“One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,
Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.”

“Perhaps this is just punishment for those who have been heartless, to understand only when nothing can be undone.”

“I’m sorry,” Laila says, marveling at how every Afghan story is marked by death and loss and unimaginable grief. And yet, she sees, people find a way to survive, to go on.”

“Tariq tucked the gun into the waist of his denims. Then he said a thing both lovely and terrible. “For you,” he said. “I’d kill with it for you, Laila.”

What about you? What is your favorite book with war in it? Thanks for stopping by today! For my US readers, I wish you a beautiful long weekend! Everybody else, have a fantastic Friday. Thanks for stopping by.

    • Thanks for stopping by Jessica 🙂 I get what you mean, when I read, I like to deal with things that don’t appear on the news or in my real life very often…

    • LOL crazy paranormal fighting is awesome to read about – especially because we don’t have to worry about it happening for real.

Thanks for stopping by Naomi 🙂

    • Thanks for stopping by to comment and follow, Andrea 🙂 It’s nice to meet you!

The war isn’t the main theme in A Thousand Splendid Suns, but the narrative happens during war.

      Have a wonderful weekend.

  1. As many times as I have seen that book, it has never struck me as something I wanted to read as I thought it was just about the war. But the way you describe it makes me want to call the local library and see if they have it available on audio! Great pick. My choice was Game of Thrones which also shows the darker aspects of human nature and has some of the most amazing characters. Have you read it?

    • Hi Donna 🙂 No, I haven’t read Game of Thrones yet – it was on my list of Top Ten most intimidating books this week 😀 But I think it’s a book I would like to read.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    • It’s really good, Traci, but it’s not very light and fluffy… Thanks for stopping by! I hope your weekend will be great as well 🙂

    • 🙂 I figured sharing some quotes was a good idea, because it’s not the kind of book I read the most often, either. And I didn’t want anyone to think there would be vampires or werewolves in this one 😉

      Thanks for stopping by Jaclyn.

Ok so I guess I kind of like books with war in them because I had a hard time choosing only two. Actually as I’m typing this I thought of another. Ha! First is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This book was one of my all time favorites! Second would be All Quuiet on the Western Front. Admittedly this took a bit for me to get into but by the end I was very emotionally invested in the story. And I have to have throw Shanghai Girls and Dreams of Joy in there as well. Both are great and are a two book series.
I have not read your choice but my husband is forever recommending The Kite Runner to me.

    • I actually haven’t read The Book Thief yet, but I do have it on my TBR (and already on my kindle, too, I think). I haven’t heard of the other books you mentioned.

Both The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns are awesome, but pretty tough to read.

Thanks for stopping by Jenn 🙂

    • LOL that’s OK Jenn, I’m not strict at all. And some Fridays, I end up with several answers, too, when I have too many answers that fit, and I don’t want to leave anyone out.
