My name is James Fenici and you will never see me coming. I walk the shadows like darkness itself. I hide in the corners where nobody looks. I live by no rules, I have no boundaries, I take no prisoners, and I never, ever blink. I am not your knight in shining armor; I’m your worst nightmare.

My name is James Fenici and you are my target. Only one of us is getting out alive, and that’s not gonna be you. Once your name is on my list, your life is over. It’s a deal I make with death, it’s a contract I sign in blood, it’s forgone conclusion—get used to it.

My name is James Fenici and I’m as dirty as they come. But then one day I saw her. And every monster I thought I was. Every fact I thought I knew. Every dirty promise I ever turned down came back to slap me in the face.

My name is James Fenici and I think I am in love.

Come is a dark, fast-paced and addictive read, in which Harper has to make some decisions about trust and her future.

My Come review:

Come is set in the same universe as the Rook & Ronin series, and the spin-off. Most of the characters are new, which makes things exciting, while at the same time because the world is familiar, it makes it easier to get to know them.

I really enjoyed Harper in Come. She has been on the run for almost a year, and it takes quite a while to realize why she’s on the run, and who exactly it is she’s running from. She has gotten so good at feeling invisible that when a guy approaches her on the beach to ask her for her name, she throws him over her shoulder before diving into the cold Pacific to get away from him.

As always, I love the way Ms. Huss writes, and Come had me captivated from start to finish in this short introduction to Harper and James. Why only three stars, then, you ask? Because James made me so very uncomfortable. He was stalking, watching, pushing, controlling, and I just couldn’t get myself to enjoy him that much. I loved Harper, though. She knows how to take care of herself, but she became careless with James – and let him manipulate her when I felt like she could have been stronger.

Come has one chapter from Harper’s point of view, then on from James’ and it’s written in first person present. Normally, I loathe the first person present tense, but that actually worked well in Come, as it made me feel that I was alongside Harper and James as the story unfolded, not after the fact. And this might also be part of the reason why James made me so uncomfortable, his green eyes were fixing me too pointedly 😉

If you have not read any other JA Huss books, I would recommend starting with the Rook & Ronin series, then with the spinoffs – and to read the books in order! There are some characters that are being talked about in Come that are main characters in these earlier books set in the same universe, and I had several moments when I was thinking ‘Aha! Now I get that part in Slack…’ or another book. Don’t let my 3 stars scare you away – if you want to read a raving positive review, please check out either Bookworm Brandee’s 5 Star Review, or Naomi from Nomi’s Paranormal Place 5 Star Review. We usually rate and rave about the same books in the same way, so my reaction just may be an anomaly here 🙂

Some of my favorite Come quotes:

But I’m certain of one thing. This girl? She is mine. I’m the one who came for her. I’m the one who found her. I’ll be the one to keep her.

I grab my stashed key behind the hot water heater and make my way to my door. Zero is my number. For mail and stuff, my address. Zero is my spot in this world. And it’s so appropriate to be nothing, and not at all in a negative way, either. I like being nothing.

Is this all they have to do? The beautiful ones? All they have to do is hold your hand to turn you stupid with lust?

But I am quiet. I don’t interrupt. And I pick and choose my battles. There is no point in fighting until I can win the war.

  1. I get what you mean about James and his behavior. I felt like he loved/hated Harper, but always had to have her. Strangely enough, the story had an out of this world feel to me with the assassins and the strange names for the operatives, I guess the world building took me away from my apprehension about James and right into new rules. Great review, Lexxie! I loved Harper too!

    • Thanks Robyn! Yeah, it did seem like he didn’t know if he loved or hated her, but he still ha to have her. I really loved Come Back though, so I have no idea why this one didn’t completely wow me.
Thanks for stopping by 🙂 Have a great weekend.

    • Brandi, JA Huss is awesome! You should really start with Rook and Ronin, though, because even this story builds on that one… I haven’t read her other series yet, but I know I will very soon.
      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  2. Excellent review, Lexxie. I understand what you’re saying about James and I can’t really explain why I didn’t feel that way…I guess mostly because James and Harper live in a world so far out of my realm of knowledge/understanding that I could deal with what he was doing even if I didn’t understand the why behind it. I will say that Come Back will illuminate things…and then not, of course. You know JA! 😉

    • I actually really, really loved Come Back, Brandee, isn’t that strange too? I totally get why you enjoyed James, and I loved him in Come Back. I can’t really put my finger on what happened to make me change my mind about him, either…
Thanks for stopping by, my friend! *BIG HUGS*

  3. I started Come, but didn’t really enjoy it and then put it down deciding to get back to it later. Well so far I haven’t yet picked it up again. For some reasonIi couldn’t get into the story it felt a bit too dark and mysterious and indeed James made me uncomfortable as well. I just didn’t like him and I felt some scenes where a bit unbelieveable.
Maybe I’ll eventually pick it up again, but I am afraid I am starting to like JA Huss her work less :(. I really enjoyed the Rook and Ronin series and Taut, but after that it seemed to have gone downwards for me, which is sad :(.
