When Sybella arrived at the doorstep of St Mortain half mad with grief and despair the convent were only too happy to offer her refuge - but at a price. The sisters of this convent serve Death, and with Sybella naturally skilled in both the arts of death and seduction, she could become one of their most dangerous weapons.

But her assassin's skills are little comfort when the convent returns her to the life that nearly drove her mad. Her father's rage and brutality are terrifying, and her brother's love is equally monstrous. But when Sybella discovers an unexpected ally she discovers that a daughter of Death may find something other than vengeance to live for...

Sybella is an amazing character to follow, and I fell in love with both her and Beast in Dark Triumph!

My Dark Triumph review:

Fast paced, filled with danger and intrigue, battles and battlescars, Dark Triumph kept me up part of the night, and on the edge of my seat to see how Sybella would deal with all of her problems all at once. And my dislike for Mortain’s abbess grew in this story – that woman needs to be marqued, and soon! The main character in Dark Triumph is Sybella, but Ismae and Duval show up as well, as does Beast. And d’Ablret truly showed his despicable colors in this installment as well.

Filled with many characters that are well developed, Dark Triumph had all the things I enjoy in a fantasy set in the far away past. As Sybella learned more about herself, and finally started to feel comfortable in her own skin, other people shared her darkest secrets without any thought of her well-being at all. Needing to find her way again, she thought she would get the absolution she needed when she was being sent to finally take care of someone she had wanted to be able to kill for a long time. Knocked out and brought somewhere else entirely, she had to learn to trust other people, though.

Written in first person present tense, Dark Triumph allowed me to discover Sybella’s thoughts and feelings at the same time she did. And some of those thoughts and feelings were very hard to read about, but very necessary for her story, and for the overall plot in this book. The fact that fantasy and historical are weaved together seamlessly made me so engrossed in the story I could hardly believe it was over – even when most things were resolved as I arrived on the last page.

Now, I’m off to get my hands on Mortal Heart, as I just want to know Annith’s story as well.

Some of my favorite Dark Triumph quotes:

He grins, and I am startled by how feral he looks, all gleaming white teeth and pale eyes in a blood-splattered face. Indeed, I do not believe he is quite human in that moment.

A rumbling begins building deep inside me, outrage that these men would so willingly consign this girl to a man such as d’Albret. It is just as it ever was: men of power are unwilling to believe anything ill of their own kind.

His grip on my arms loosens, and slowly, he leans toward me. My own temper forgotten, I hold very, very still. “If you hit me again, I will kill you,” I whisper.

    • LOL, I’m drowned in Uni, too, but reading for pleasure is my life-line! Really and truly.
You should keep this series for when you have some time, Jules, it’s really well done.
