From the author of the international bestseller Go the Fuck to Sleep comes a long-awaited sequel about the other great parental frustration: getting your little angel to eat something that even vaguely resembles a normal meal. Profane, loving, and deeply cathartic, You Have to Fucking Eat breaks the code of child-rearing silence, giving moms and dads new, old, grand-, and expectant a much-needed chance to laugh about a universal problem.

A perfect gift book like the smash hit Go the Fuck to Sleep (over 1.5 million copies sold worldwide!), You Have to Fucking Eat perfectly captures Adam Mansbach's trademark humor, which is simultaneously affectionate and radically honest. You probably shouldn't read it to your kids.

You Have to Fucking Eat includes sarcastic wit galore, and the story rings true! My kids all ate everything we put in front of them, more or less, but I’ve seen kids who hardly ate anything at all for ages…

My You Have to Fucking Eat review:

You Have to Fucking Eat is a hilarious parody of a children’s book – complete with awesome illustrations, and rhyming text. It is not at all aimed at children, though, but rather it is for tired parents who need a good laugh. When kids more or less refuse to eat – when nothing you put in front of them on a plate makes it to their mouth and tummy, You Have to Fucking Eat is the perfect way to relieve some of that stress with a laugh.

The illustrations are reminiscent of children’s books, and I totally love the rhymes, as well as the adequate cursing. When having small children who just don’t want to cooperate is your new  normal, the humor in You Have to Fucking Eat just might be the thing that helps save your sanity.

It appears that You Have to Fucking Eat is also an audiobook, and I’m sure that’s just as hilarious as the written version is. For just a few minutes, you’ll get many laughs with this one, and while you can’t really show it to your kids… yet, it might be something fun to share with them when they’re in their late teens and they wonder how you survived their toddler years.

Some of my favorite You Have to Fucking Eat quotes:

Your cute little tummy is rumbling.
And pancakes are your favorite treat.
I’m kind of surprised that you suddenly hate them.
That’s bullshit. Stop lying and eat.

You’re not finished, and no, you can’t go to school
In pajamas, a hat, and bare feet.
Whatever, put shoes on and bring me your plate,
My whole diet’s the shit you won’t eat.

    • I know, and I think humor is the only way to survive those moments when everything just seems difficult, and you feel like you haven’t slept for years 😀

  1. I don’t know those books but I wish I could take a look at them. Having just finished watching Dexter, the title sound a lot like Debra ! And my daughters are not that old that I don’t know what it is to make them eat proper food : I put olives (olives, mind you, even the cat eats them !) in the rissoto at noon, they didn’t want to eat that. I could understand, not everybody likes them. But the dried tomatoes ! Who doesn’t like tomatoes ! And the “I hope there are no mushrooms in here” – well, yes, there were mushrooms in the vegetables with the risotto, dear. j
All this to say : I’d love to read this book lol

    • This one was so much fun, Iza, a lot of true things about kids and the difficulties parents can have when it comes to food 🙂
My kids actually love olives, and tomatoes in all forms, too. But as I said in my review, I was always really lucky when it came to food, they always ate everything, even when they were little.

    • LOL yes it is, Brandee! I read the Go the Fuck to Sleep one, too, and that’s a story I wish I’d had when my first to kids were tiny… they never slept more than two hours at a time.
Have a wonderful Wednesday, my dear. *BIG HUGS*
