Hunter by Night is a pretty typical vampire story, in which the relationship between a human girl and a tough vampire warrior is the main subject.
My Hunter by Night review:
I think the fact that Hunter by Night is not all that different from a lot of other paranormal romances made me not completely into it, as I thought I would be. Lee is several hundred years old, and for most of those years, he has hated humans because of what they did to his family way back when. Alexia is staying with the vampires only because her best friend is the vampire queen, and some old enemies have re-appeared, thus making it difficult to keep everybody safe.
Lee didn’t behave like such an old vampire most of the time, and Hunter by Night felt a little flat to me because of that. I had a little trouble believing he could fall so utterly in love with Alexia, even if she is a good female character, there wasn’t really anything special about her, except for the fact that her blood was very rich. The old enemies turned out to not be as dangerous as they seemed, at least in the few fight-scenes that were shown to me.
I don’t know if I would have enjoyed Hunter by Night more if I had read the first two books in the series before this one, but I found it to be too similar to many other vampire stories already out there. The writing is good, though, and the steamy scenes are definitely hot. I may go back and read the prior books in the Chronicles of Yavn to see if I feel differently once I know more about the other characters that are part of the plot.

An ominous click when the central air kicked into action made Alexia’s ticker go staccato. She paused, hearing nothing but the rush of white noise as a prickly agitation and a layer of goos bumps covered her bare arms.
In a sudden moment of overwhelm, Alexia slapped at Lee’s hand, backing against the door. God, if he kept running his fingers all over her, she’d lose her mind.
Lee pressed his lips together. Leave it to Alexia to use ice cream as an analogy under pressure.

Yup it does bear similarities to BDB and such. But I suggest that you do go back and read the previous two? It’s sad though because this is the last in the series (publisher issues) so maybe you felt a lot of things are rushed?
Yeah, I think it would be a great idea to read the first two books. It’s always difficult when I get an ARC for a later book in a series, because I really don’t always have the time to catch up, if I’m not up do date already.

I think that a series is better if you have read all the books, even if they can be read as standalones. Sounds like what has happened here and it’s a shame you didn’t enjoy it as much as you hoped. Great review Lexie!

Sounds kind of meh, for me, since I’m really all about the characters. It really frustrates me when a character doesn’t fit – if he’s an ancient vampire he should act like an ancient vampire! And I like some twists and originality. Oh well, really good review Lexxie:)

I haven’t read Elizabeth Staab before, Lexxie. But your description of this book leaves me feeling ‘meh’. I’m glad the writing was good and that it had good steamy scenes…sounds like that might have been its only redeeming features. Nice review, as always. 🙂
