Mels Carmichael, reporter for the Caldwell Courier Journal, gets the shock of her life when a man stumbles in front of her car outside the local cemetery. After the accident, his amnesia is just the kind of mystery she likes to solve, but she soon discovers they're over their heads with his past. Over their heads with passion, too ...As shadows walk the line between reality and another realm, and her lover's memory begins to come back, the two of them learn that nothing is truly dead and buried. Especially when you're trapped in a no-holds-barred war between angels and demons. With a soul on the line, and Mels's heart at risk, what in heaven - or in hell - will it take to save them both?
After reporter Mels Carmichael hits a disheveled man with her car
outside the local cemetery, she pays a visit to the stranger in the hospital. The only thing he remembers of his past is seeing a name written on a headstone: that of Jim Heron—a fallen angel charged with rescuing souls from the seven deadly sins. Now, as Mels struggles to help this mysterious stranger rediscover himself, Heron himself returns to prepare for a battle between good and evil.
Rapture showed a different side of Jim Heron, and it had some interesting developments when it came to the sides of ‘good’ and ‘bad’, as well as a character I didn’t think we’d ever see again.
My Rapture review:
There are a lot of things happening in Rapture that I can’t really mention in my review for fear of spoiling things! There is a mystery soul Jim and Adrian need to try and save, and this is the main plot and story-line. There are two interesting sub-plots as well, on involving Devina and her vile ways of trying to distract Jim from finding the right soul and doing what is needed to get that soul for ‘the good side’. The other sub-plot, about all the missing people in Caldwell, may very well become a bigger plot in a future book, especially with the way that was left.
I enjoyed Mels quite a bit, a strong woman, hard worker and a little lost in her own life, she went through a lot over the span of the story in Rapture. And she had her eyes opened in more ways than one, too. Her new relationship was very instantaneous, though, and because the other character had amnesia, she really didn’t know that much about him… which made me think she was less smart than I had first thought.
The writing was very good, this is a Ward novel, after all. Written in third person, past tense, with a nearly omniscient narrator, I got a good knowledge of all of the characters, but I wasn’t as enthralled with Rapture as I have been with other books in the Fallen Angels series. Maybe I’ve stayed away for too long? I will continue with this series, though, mostly because I really enjoy both Jim and Devina, and the fight they have to ‘win’ souls to see if good or bad should take over the world.
Some of my favorite Rapture quotes:
They would be coming again for him. It was, after all, exactly what he’d earned.
So yeah, it didn’t take a genius to ascribe his inappropriateness to the ennui of a balding former coxswain, the bitterness from a lifetime of not-quite-there intersecting with the almost-out-of-time of a man about to hump sixty. Then again, maybe he was just a prick.
At the end of the day, playing Grim Reaper was fun to him, and this was the only legally sanctioned way to do it. Even the canniest serial killers got caught after a while. Working in this capacity for the U.S. government? His only rate limiter was his ability to stay alive.

Shoot me, because I’m never read a J.R Ward book before, lmao. I feel like her paranormal stories are a bit too much for me. I did love Nalini Singh’s paranormal series but I did feel drained after reading them, lol. Great review, Lexxie! 😀
I really love this author, but have yet to read this series. I don’t know why…but what I do love most about J.R. Ward is how easy it is to get drawn into the stories.
I’ve never read a book by this author before. This one sounds interesting too.

I still have yet to read the last one. me and my endings! This series is no BDB, but it’s by Ward so it’s still something. I like Jim and Davina’s arc over the books leads though, they just don’t grip the same way. Also, Davina is very funny, she’s kinda hard to top. lol
Fab review, Lex!
I haven’t been able to get into BDB, but I wanted to so bad.
Nicely balanced review. I have yet to read a J.R. Ward book. I see them everywhere and have heard so many great things. I even own a couple. Crazy.
