Being a goddess is a lot less fun than you might think. Especially when you’re only a half goddess, and you only found out about it recently, and you still don’t know what you’re doing half the time. And when you’ve just used your not-so-reliable powers to burglarize the booby-trapped office of a vampire mob boss.

Yeah, that part sucks.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for Cassandra Palmer, aka the Pythia, the freshly minted chief seer of the supernatural world. After all, Cassie still has to save a friend from a fate worse than death, deal with an increasingly possessive master vampire, and prevent a party of her own acolytes from unleashing a storm of fury upon the world. Totally just your average day at the office, right?

Tempt the Stars blew me away! I don’t think I can wait another second to pick up the next book in the Cassie Palmer series, because holy cliffhanger, Batman!!

My Tempt the Stars review:

Cassie definitely had her work cut out for her in this fast-paced adventure! Tempt the Stars was filled with intrigue and action, and for many things, Cassie was still kept in the dark about her powers, the fact that there were more people out there both looking out for her, and doing what they could to stop her. The vampires kept her thinking she was safe with them, especially Mircea, even if he didn’t actually show up for real in this installment. Pirkin gone, she had to count on other allies to make sure she got to where she needed to be, first in order to have a little chat with mommy-dearest – in the past – and then to put together a team to see if there was anything she could do to save Pirkin from one of Hell’s dimensions.

Caleb and Casanova (yeah, that Casanova…) didn’t really have a choice but to stand with her, if they wanted to make sure Cassie stayed safe, and it was funny to see how she was able to manipulate them into doing her bidding. Tempt the stars went back and forth in time, since that was one of the powers Cassie had been able to more or less master. However, never really ending up exactly where she wanted made things quite difficult for her and her crew as well.

There was a certain sadness in Tempt the Stars that I don’t remember being so present in the other installments, and I really wished someone had come forward before they did to show her how much she could do, and help her both to anchor her powers, and to shield herself from those who wanted to do her harm. Well-written and showing aspects of Cassie’s personality I really enjoyed, it was a solid story that left me wanting much more.

Written in past tense, first person point of view from Cassie’s perspective, the dialogues showed that the characters surrounding her were well fleshed-out as well. And I found some fun food quotes I have already shared in my past week’s Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearst post 🙂 I am now searching through my kindle for the next story, and I’m very happy I’m participating in the #2015HW challenge that helped me put this series back on my actual reading list this year.

Some of my favorite Tempt the Stars Quotes:

I wondered which would bother Mircea more, me making out with a war mage or with the guy the world remembered as Merlin?

I guess most people who pissed of the council didn’t live long enough to need a holding cell. But that meant, instead of visiting Pritkin in some dark, dank, cell, I was visiting him in some dark, dank bar. On the whole, I’d have preferred the cell. I was sitting cross-legged in my chair to avoid the floor, which had passed nasty a year ago and was working on horrific.

I drank. People, or things, or things pretending to be people came and went, paying no attention to the three bums sprawled in the corner. Caleb kept glancing around, but not like he was tensing to fight. More like the bland familiarity of the lobby was reassuring to him. It wasn’t doing a lot for me.

  1. I like this series, but with there being so much time between each book, it makes it hard to keep this series on my radar. The other thing with it is it moves very fast, that I don’t feel like Cassie has time to breath. I think it was in this book that I realized that it has been only six months since the start of the first book. I think I would’ve had a heart attack if that were me. All that said, I do love the series and will continue to read. Great review. 🙂

    • I totally get what you mean, Melanie! I read the first three books back-to-back, then I kind of forgot about it for a long time. Now, I know the next book is coming out soon, and I just feel like I NEED it right now 🙂 You’re right, though the whole storyline only spans over a few months, and if I had been Cassie I’d be so dizzy from everything it would be impossible to keep up with anything at all.

Woo hoo – 5 stars! What a fun review and this book sounds like a great read. Like the fact that it’s over 400 pages giving time for us to really get to know the characters. Hugs and happy Wednesday! Ro

  3. This author sounds familiar, I think I once bought the first book in this series. I think I DNF’d it as I haven’t even marked it on goodreads, so that must have been long ago. I really like this cover though and it sounds like a good book, so I might have to see if I still have the first book and give it another try. Great review Lexxie!

  4. Goodness! It seems a lot goes on between where I left off and #6, Lexxie. I just may have to listen to this series, as well, to catch up. Were you exhausted when you reached the end. Reading your review reminded me (and it’s been years since I last read a book in this series) that there’s always so much action that I felt exhausted once I finished. 🙂 I’m glad the series is still going strong. Although I’m sad that Mircea and Pirkin weren’t really ‘there’. Great review, my dear! **BIG HUGS**

  5. Yay! At least this will be fresh on your mind by the time Reaping the Wind gets here! I have loved every book in this series! I felt sad at times too, because Cassie didn’t have the people there to help her growing up. If only things were different. The ending got me and I have been waiting for almost two years for the next book… sigh!
