Sidekick Saturday #11 – Soldier

Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC’s Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn’t have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in this week’s type
• Share a picture (if possible) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don’t include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• Put your link in the Linky thing and comment

This week, the side character I’m presenting you is a soldier:

Oh my, I am really late posting today, I have been thinking and thinking and then – finally it came to me – I do know a side character who is a soldier. I present to you Jasper Cullen from Twilight! He was a soldier in the civil war when he was turned into a vampire against his will, and for a long time he was a part of a coven where they hunted down humans and scared them for fun – maybe turning some of them, and having wars against other vampires. Then, Alice found him and together they found Carlisle and became veggie vamps instead. But Jasper always had a very hard time around humans, so going to high-school, or hanging out with Bella were not at all his favorite things to do in the series.

I can’t find any quotes from him, sorry about that! Twilight and the other books in the series were the first I read a few years ago, after having not read much at all for several years. I breezed through them quickly, and got hooked on reading again thanks to it. I haven’t looked back since, I found some like-minded women on the internet, we started a discussion place together, we all signed up on Goodreads, I started my blog… as they say – the rest is history. And now, I read several books each week. All thanks to some sparkly and very unlikely vegetarian vampires 🙂

Thanks for stopping by today! Please leave your link in the comments so I can visit your Sidekick Saturday post as well!

  1. Jasper is a great choice, Lexxie. I had to think and think about this one as well…there were so many ways to go with it. I didn’t think of Jasper though. I enjoyed his history a lot in the last book. (I think it was only in Breaking Dawn) I also liked that he was from Texas! 😉

And on a side note, it was Twilight that sparked my branching off into other genres. Before then, I only read ‘literary’ fiction. Boy was I missing out on so many books! 🙂

    Happy Saturday, Lexxie! <3

  2. Yeah, I’m happy I thought of Jasper, because I was drawing a blanc. There are several soldiers in books I love, but they can’t be considered to be sidekicks! Not even by a long stretch 🙂

Thanks for stopping by Brandee! Have a great Saturday, too.

  3. I love Jasper. He was one of my favorite characters in the series. I wished more screen time for him when the movies came out. Twilight was the reading spark for me too. I called my sister in a totally wrecked state and told her I needed to start reading fun material or I was going to lose my mind. She delivered to my door a grocery bag filled with all four books. I read the books through my youngest’s kidney drama back when he was a baby. After that I couldn’t stop. I had no idea this world of blogging existed, but we had the best book chats.

    • YAY Robyn 🙂 I agree, he didn’t get much screen time, but at the same time, I hadn’t imagined him as that actor, so it was a toss-up for me.

Your sister is really cool, since she made sure you stayed sane, and she also made your reading expand tremendously.

Isn’t it amazing that now we can have book chats without even being in the same country? I love the internet so much! I have made a lot of friends this way, and am even going to Paris in 12 days to hang out with one of my best friends and watch the arrival of the Tour de France on Champs-Elysées. It’s the third time in a row we do this, and we met online as well, many moons ago.

Thanks for stopping by Robyn 🙂 *hugs*

      • Shan is so very cool. She introduced me to Mercy Thompson, Morganville, Richelle Mead (Succubus Blues was my very first adult romance-I called her right after the first sex scene totally shocked). I loved the days when I told her it was time to pick a new series and she’d fill those grocery bags so we could find my next read. Then I introduced her to our public library after I tapped out her book shelves. And she’s always the first person to read my books (and the only one who liked my sad attempt at sci-fi).

        • I wish my own sister read more – but I’m not having a lot of friends who are readers in real life. Succubus Blues was pretty good – at least the first books – I usually love Richelle Mead’s books. Your sister has great taste in books, maybe your Sci-Fi just needs to be polished?

  4. You had to know that I’d go running for my books when I read you couldn’t find any Jasper quotes. 🙂
Jasper smiled faintly, “I have a lot of scars like yours, Bella.”

“I didn’t quite have the same…upbringing as my adopted siblings here. My beginning was something else entirely.” His voice turned hard as he finished.

“‘Major Jasper Whitlock, ma’am.’ I stammered, unable to be impolite to a female, even if she was a ghost.”

“She was there – expecting me, naturally.” He chuckled once. “She hopped down from the high stool at the counter as soon as I walked in and came directly toward me.”

Jasper smiled down at her. “You held out your hand, and I took it without stopping to make sense of what I was doing. for the first time in almost a century, I felt hope.”

“Alice has made all the difference,” Jasper agreed. “This is a climate I enjoy.”

“Carlisle’s right.” Jasper spoke only to us…”They’ll fight like children. the two most important things you’ll need to remember are, first, don’t let them get their arms around you and, second, don’t go for the obvious kill. That;s all they’ll be prepared for. As long as you come at them from the side and keep moving, they’ll be too confused to respond effectively.”

Jasper chuckled, shaking his head, “You truly are one frightening little monster.”

That should do for now. 🙂

    • YAY thank you Xyra! I knew I could count on you! I have the hard-copies of Twilight, even if I already owned a kindle when I read those. And I don’t ever make highlights in my beautiful hard cover books. Ever.

And it’s extra nice to see you here on my blog, since you’re one of the people I ‘met’ thanks to Twilight! Love all the quotes you found – now I almost want to do a re-read – even if I’m thinking I might not enjoy it as much now as I did then.

      Have a wonderful weekend Xyra!

      • You’re welcome. I don’t highlight either. That “browse inside” option for the Twilight books is oh, so very handy.

I love Jasper and his back story. He speaks so infrequently, but there is so much to choose from, but I focused on Eclipse. Did find out that they added that super line he had during the New Moon vote…in the book all he said was “yes.”

I am so very happy to be here. It’s a wonderful thing that Twilight brought so many people together. And our little group is just the tip of the iceberg. 🙂 <3

        Have a great weekend, Lexxie!

        • The GUSIALI home page. In the right hand side bar – Book Browse – the pictures aren’t there anymore, but the links still work for browsing. You can’t see everything online, but it will give you the page number where the word appears and you can search your hard copy from there to see the whole text.

  5. I am so glad you had to think so long on this one because I love this choice! I didn’t even think about him, but he so great 😀 A true soldier and well-bred gentleman turned vegetarian vampire. I didn’t actually read the books until watching the first movie. I didn’t know the books existed until then…I was too busy reading The Hollows LOL. I love learning about what got you into blogging as well. It’s funny what made each of us start reading more and more and really get into the world of blogging. Have a great weekend!!

    • LOL I ‘discovered’ Twilight because my daughter had read the first one, or she had seen the movie, I can’t remember exactly. I devoured the books, and felt a little lost afterwards. Thank goodness for the internet, because doing a search with something like twilight+adult I found my group of like-minded women 🙂

I haven’t read The Hollows yet (or maybe the 1st) but it is on my never-ending TBR.

Thanks for stopping by Jaclyn 🙂
