Sidekick Showcase - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC’s Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn’t have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Saturday, and so will Jaclyn, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on Jaclyn’s page. Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in the week’s topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don’t include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post their’s throughout the week as well

Sidekick Showcase #28 – Creepy

Today’s theme is Creepy! And there sure are a lot of creepy sidekicks out there! Today, I am going with Sarren from Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series. Sarren is both crazy and creepy, and I think his craziness is partly why he is so creepy! He is not afraid of anything, nor of anyone. He is set on one thing, and one thing only, that is revenge. Sarren is one of the vampire Kanin left to be experimented on to battle the awful virus that killed humans and made vampires into rabids. And Sarren hates Kanin with a passion that is extremely strong – he will stop at nothing to torture Kanin and his offspring until he might, or might not, kill them in the end.

Now is one of those times I wish I was good at drawing! I have this perfect image of Sarren in my head, alas, my drawing skills are not good, so I’m not even going to try 🙁 Here are some creepy quotes for you:

From The Immortal Rules:

“Did Sarren come down here?” “Sarren? You mean psycho vamp with the messed-up face? Yeah. Yeah, he did.” I jerked my thumb toward teh steel door, just as another thud echoed down the hallway, followed by a desperate screech. “Friend of yours, Kanin? He seemed very interested in peeling my skin off.” “You’re very lucky to be alive,” Kanin muttered, shaking his head, and I thought I heard the faintest note of admiration in his voice. “He surprised me last night. I didn’t think he would find me here so soon.”

“And now look where he is – captured and tortured by that psychotic freak, Sarran. You must be so proud to have followed the same road as our sire.”

“Hello, old friend,” Sarren crooned, bringing his scarred face very close, so that I could see the madness raging in his black eyes. “You can’t go to sleep yet, I’m afraid. What fun would that be? I have the whole night planned out.” He chuckled and stepped back, watching me hang limply from the chains. At least I was no longer upside down, though I suspected one of my arms was still broken. It was difficult to tell; my body had been broken, healed and systematically broken again; the only thing I was aware of now was the Hunger.

From The Eternity Cure:

“What if Sarren isn’t there? ” Kanin smiled humorlessly. “I think the more pressing question would be: What if he is?”

But Kanin had secrets of his own, and one night the darkest of them caught up to us in the form of Sarren, a twisted vampire with a vendetta. Dangerous, cunning and completely out of his mind, Sarren had tracked us to the hidden lab we were using as a hideout, and we were forced do flee.

Because in times of extreme duress, pain or emotion, blood called to blood, and I could sense what my sire was feeling. Agony. Sarren had found him . And was taking his revenge.

It was testament to Sarren’s skill, or perhaps insanity, that he kept me alive when I was doing my best to die. Tonight, though, he is oddly passive.

Sarren stands a few feet away, watching me blankly, his face a web of scars. Last night, his eyes glowed feverishly as he screamed and railed at me, demanding I talk, answer his question.

But I can’t move, and Sarren approaches slowly, the stake held before him like a cross. He is smiling again, a demonic grin that stretches his entire ravaged face and makes his fangs gleam.

“I can’t kill you, yet,” he says, touching my chest with the very tip of the stake, right over my heart. “No, not yet. That would spoil the ending, and I have a glorious song in mind. Oh, yes, it will be magnificent.

I had to rescue him from Sarren’s sick insanity, before he drove my sire completely over the edge.

    • We need to invent more hours per day for you, Brandee, and probably for me, too. We need to catch up on some series so we have even more to chat about!

Thanks for stopping by 🙂 *hugs*

    • That’s really funny, Jaclyn! I’m even happier that I actually picked Sarren, then! It would be great if I could transfer my image of Sarren to your head, Jaclyn, then you could draw him for me 😀

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great weekend.

    • Oh Robyn, this series is pretty dark for sure, but it’s so good! And the characters are so very attaching 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by.

    • It is a fun meme, Lindy, feel free to participate when you feel like it 🙂

I first read the prequel too, and I was hooked straight away. Both of the Immortal Rules books I’ve read were awesome 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by.
