Sidekick Showcase - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC’s Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn’t have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Saturday, and so will Jaclyn, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on Jaclyn’s page. Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in the week’s topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don’t include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post their’s throughout the week as well

Sidekick Showcase #34 – To Bite or Not to Bite…

For the month of January, we should choose characters that we love, but have that one thing that they should definitely set a New Years Resolution for…that one flaw that they need to work on that maybe is even resolved in the series as the character grows. Sidekicks in need of Resolutions…

One I think who really needs to make up her mind, and either do it or not is Ivy from Kim Harrison’s The Hollows series. Ivy is a vampire, and I love her, but she is trying so hard to kind of not be a vampire, she almost makes herself sick at times. It’s not her fault, her master has almost brain-washed her to make it so that drinking blood becomes a merger of pleasure and pain, love and hate, life and death. But if she is strong enough to not kill everyone she drinks from, I think she can also make up her mind to just take the pleasant parts of the blood, not the bad. Yes, it would definitely take work, but usually, Ivy is not shy of work at all. She’s organized, smart and a wonderful character. I just wish she would let herself actually feel the love, you know?

From Every Which Way but Dead:

“You look like the vamp who bled the cat.”

“We were the pair. One too afraid to feel anything lest she lose control of her ironclad hold on her emotions, and the other so hungry to feel anything that she´d risk her free will for one night of fun.”

“I felt my shoulders ease at her admission. She was going to do what she had to do, and I was going to do what I had to do. And Ivy? Ivy was going to go insane.”

From A Fistful of Charms:

She had given me a piece of what made her life sane.

“Can we get back to how we’re going to kill Nick? And what’s this about a dead body? You’d better start talking quick, Ivy, ’cause I’m not going to play hide-and-seek with a dead guy in my trunk. I did that in college, and I’m not going to do it again.” A smile quirked Ivy’s mouth.
“Really?” she asked, and I flushed.

A tear slipped from under my eyelid at Ivy’s loneliness, her need for emotional reassurance, and her frustrations that though I could understand what she wanted, I was afraid to find out if I had the capacity to meet her halfway, to trust her. And my breath caught when she wiped the moisture away with a careful finger, unaware that it was for her.

Ivy had once said that sharing blood was a way to show deep affection, loyalty, and friendship. I felt that way about her, but what she wanted from me was so far from what I understood that I was afraid. She wanted to share with me something so complex and intangible that the shallow emotional vocabulary of human and witch didn’t have the words or cultural background to define it. She was waiting for me to figure it out. And I lumped it all with sex because I didn’t understand.

I could certainly have added much more quotes, but I was a little bit lazy… I’m sure you get my drift, though 🙂

Thanks for stopping by today! Have a great day, and don’t forget to sign up on the linky, and also let me know where to find yours in the comments so I can come visit your resolution for your sidekick showcase 🙂

  1. I thought of her for this one too. She is so amazing! And scary. And sad. Oh the girl totally broke my heart in the last installment I read. I haven’t been able to return to the series. I will though. Oh, guess what came in at the library…My Favorite Mistake. hehe

    • Yeah, Ivy is made of strong/tough and is such a great friend. And that’s part of why she’s so awesome – this indecision she has.

I hope you’ll enjoy My Favorite Mistake, Robyn 😀 I want updates!!

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

    • She has kind of made up her mind, she wants to be good and not kill people each time she feeds. It’s just that sometimes, she needs more!

This series is really awesome Melanie. All the characters are well done, and even in book 12, I am just as amazed.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    • If you enjoyed the first three books you’ll continue to be happy with this series, Jeann! I have read all the released books so far, and I am amazed at how something that was a tiny sub-plot in one book becomes a big part of the plot in another book!

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

    • Oh that’s just sad, Braine! I love Rachel, Jenks, Ivy, and even Trent! But I totally agree with DNF’ing and just stop to read a series you aren’t into! There are just too many great books out there 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Oh, Ivy. I think I sigh every time I think about her. So strong, such an amazing friend, but yes she really does need to get in better touch with that side of herself. I can see her growing though. I have pretty high hopes for these last two books where she’s concerned. What a fantastic choice! Have a great week 😀 Jaclyn @ JC’s Book Haven.

    • I agree, she has already grown a lot! I think she’s a great character and friend, too. I can’t wait to read The Undead Pool. It’s a little bit your fault I’ve gotten so obsessed with this series, Jaclyn 🙂

  3. Did we discuss Ivy?!? I can’t remember but she came to mind for me as well, Lexxie! GMTA, no? 🙂 Ivy is a great choice, my friend. She is such a complex character. I suppose all of Harrison’s characters are, but Ivy is rather tortured.

I hope your weekend was spectacular! Mine went by way to quickly. 🙂 How is the exan studying going? When do you take it? Have you already…I can’t remember! Gah! And February is too close…school will be starting for you soon.

We DO need to finish our review of Fearsome I’ll try to get some thoughts sent your way tomorrow…but it may not be until Tuesday. My kids are out of school tomorrow (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) and the girls both have all-day rehearsals, so Jax and I are going to do something special. 🙂

    *BIG HUGS* Lexxie!!

    • Actually, I don’t think we discussed Ivy. It’s funny that you considered her as well 🙂 She is very complex, and tortured. I love the characters in The Hollows – they are all fleshed out.

My exam didn’t go so well (it was yesterday afternoon) It’s the strangest oral exam I’ve ever had to take! We didn’t get any time to prepare our answer, and the professor decided what kind of question to ask us. Usually, we pick a paper and that’s where our question is – then we have 15-30 minutes to jot our thoughts down before we actually have to talk. I completely blocked and could hardly talk at all 🙁

I hope you had a good day off yesterday! And that Jax and you had fun!

Thanks for stopping by! *BIG HUGS* right back 🙂

      • Oh Lexxie, I’m so sorry your exam didn’t go well. 🙁 I don’t like the sound of how it was administered at all. This was not an improv class…I don’t see how the professor could have expected that you’d be able to pick up a question and just ‘go’. It seems a bit unfair, actually.

Well, just let it go. There’s nothing to be done now but move on, right? 🙂 And don’t take a class from the professor again. I’m sending **HUGE HUGS** your way, my friend! I hope you enjoy your day!

        • Yeah, I know I need to let it go – but it sucks to not succeed 😀

I did get good news today, though, a written exam I had just before Christmas has been graded, and I did really well 😀 So I’m a lot happier now than I was yesterday and this morning.

          *BIG HUGS*

  4. I read that title and immediately Myrnin from the Morganville Vampire series popped to mind.

I’m not so sure he is a sidekick, but a very strong side character. He struggles with that very question daily when it comes to Claire. He’d definitely like to bite and change her, but also knows it would damage the relationship they have if he does. The fact that he is not stable 100% of the time compounds the problem. He has tried…

    Love Myrnin!

    • Myrnin is an excellent choice, Xyra! I love that crazy vampire. Can you believe I still haven’t read Dayligthers? I just can’t make myself start it, since it’s the last book in the Morganville series 🙁

Have a great day, my friend 🙂 *hugs*
