Paperweight cover - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Paperweight – Meg Haston

Seventeen-year-old Stevie is trapped. In her life. In her body. And now in an eating-disorder treatment center on the dusty outskirts of the New Mexico desert.
Life in the center is regimented and intrusive, a nightmare come true. Nurses and therapists watch Stevie at mealtime, accompany her to the bathroom, and challenge her to eat the foods she’s worked so hard to avoid.
Her dad has signed her up for sixty days of treatment. But what no one knows is that Stevie doesn’t plan to stay that long. There are only twenty-seven days until the anniversary of her brother Josh’s death—the death she caused. And if Stevie gets her way, there are only twenty-seven days until she too will end her life.
In this emotionally haunting and beautifully written young adult debut, Meg Haston delves into the devastating impact of trauma and loss, while posing the question: Why are some consumed by their illness while others embark on a path toward recovery?

The Leveller cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsThe Leveller (The Leveller #1) – Julia Durango

Nixy Bauer is used to her classmates being very, very unhappy to see her. After all, she’s a bounty hunter in a virtual reality gaming world. Irritated parents, looking to wrench their kids back to reality, hire Nixy to jump into the game and retrieve them.
But when the game’s billionaire developer loses track of his own son in the MEEP, Nixy is in for the biggest challenge of her bounty-hunting career. Wyn Salvador isn’t some lazy kid looking to escape his homework: Wyn does not want to be found. And he’s left behind a suicide note. Nixy takes the job but quickly discovers that Wyn’s not hiding—he’s being held inside the game against his will. But who is holding him captive, and why?
Nixy and Wyn attempt to fight their way out of a mind game unlike any they’ve encountered, and the battle brings them closer than either could have imagined. But when the whole world is virtual, how can Nixy possibly know if her feelings are real?
Gamers and action fans of all types will dive straight into the MEEP, thanks to Julia Durango’s cinematic storytelling. A touch of romance adds some heart to Nixy’s vivid, multidimensional journey through Wyn’s tricked-out virtual city, and constant twists keep readers flying through to the breathtaking end.

None of the Above cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsNone of the Above – I.W. Gregorio

A groundbreaking story about a teenage girl who discovers she’s intersex . . . and what happens when her secret is revealed to the entire school. Incredibly compelling and sensitively told, None of the Above is a thought-provoking novel that explores what it means to be a boy, a girl, or something in between.
What if everything you knew about yourself changed in an instant?
When Kristin Lattimer is voted homecoming queen, it seems like another piece of her ideal life has fallen into place. She’s a champion hurdler with a full scholarship to college and she’s madly in love with her boyfriend. In fact, she’s decided that she’s ready to take things to the next level with him.
But Kristin’s first time isn’t the perfect moment she’s planned–something is very wrong. A visit to the doctor reveals the truth: Kristin is intersex, which means that though she outwardly looks like a girl, she has male chromosomes, not to mention boy “parts.”
Dealing with her body is difficult enough, but when her diagnosis is leaked to the whole school, Kristin’s entire identity is thrown into question. As her world unravels, can she come to terms with her new self?

A Game of Thrones Graphic Novel cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsA Game of Thrones graphic novel – George R.R. Martin

You’ve read the books. You’ve watched the hit series on HBO. Now acclaimed novelist Daniel Abraham and illustrator Tommy Patterson bring George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy masterwork A Game of Thrones to majestic new life in the pages of this full-color graphic novel. Comprised of the initial six issues of the comic book series, this is the first volume in what is sure to be one of the most coveted collaborations of the year. Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name.

Last week, I got the kindle book for GoT, because I have to read it for class, and many other bloggers agreed with me that these books are really intimidating. Since we’re talking about different media in my class, I figured I could just start with the graphic novel, and ease myself into the full-length novel for this to make sure it’s as enjoyable as possible for me.

The Stranger You Seek cover - (un)Conventional Bookviews

The Stranger You Seek (Keye Street #1) – Amanda Kyle Williams

In the sweltering heat of an Atlanta summer, a killer is pushing the city to its breaking point, preying on the unsuspecting, writing taunting letters to the media, promising more death. Desperate to stop the Wishbone Killer, A.P.D. lieutenant Aaron Rauser turns to the one person he knows can penetrate a deranged mind: Keye Street, an ex–FBI profiler and former addict who now picks up jobs where she can get them. But the last thing Keye wants is to be pulled into the firestorm of Atlanta’s worst nightmare. And then it suddenly becomes clear that the hunter has become the hunted—and the stranger she seeks is far closer than she ever dared imagine.

This one was only $1.99 for kindle, and I couldn’t resist. I have read the 3rd book Don’t Talk to Strangers already, and I loved it.

The Probability of Violet and Luke cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsThe Probability of Violet and Luke (The Coincidence #4) – Jessica Sorensen

But when Luke gets into some gambling trouble with the wrong people, destiny decides to throw the two of them together and they head out to Vegas to try and settle Luke’s debt.
As Violet spends time with Luke, she becomes torn on whether she should be with him. She definitely can’t deny that her life is better when she’s with Luke and she starts to wonder if going back to Preston was a mistake.
Things seem to be going well as Violet opens up more to Luke, but then she gets a call from the detective, not only to give an update on Mira Price and the case, but to give information about some threatening texts she’s been getting. The information is not only shocking, but makes Violet question what kind of people her parents really where and whether she’ll be able to trust anyone ever again.

Scorned cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsScorned (From the Inside Out #1) – S.L. Scott

We shared a love that regulated every heartbeat and every breath we took. It was all encompassing. I thought our love could withstand time and anything thrown our way.
I was wrong. So wrong.
I used to be happy. I used to be Juliette Weston when Dylan Somers filled my life with promises of love and a happy ever after. But when he took my heart and broke it into a million pieces, I became someone else entirely. In one afternoon, I lost my soul mate. I lost everything I knew myself to be.
Three years later, the man who destroyed me is back.
To assuage his guilt? To finish the job? It doesn’t matter… I won’t let him this time. I’m stronger. I’ve moved on. He won’t affect me.
This is a story of love and betrayal. Pain and loss. Happiness and fate. It’s about finding your true destiny.
This is our story.

Cleopatra's Return cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsCleopatra’s Return – Eve Langlais

One former Egyptian queen plus two vampires equals a threesome with lots of bite.
I’ve paid my dues in Hell for my mistakes, but Satan thinks I’m too dangerous to keep around so he’s kicked me out into the modern world for a second chance.
Ambushed by a pest from my past, I’m rescued by a seriously hot vamp. I vowed to not allow men to use me anymore, a pledge forgotten with Michael’s first kiss. And when Julius, my first love, shows up bitter and angry, I can’t help but want him too.
Maybe I do deserve the nickname Whore Queen, for I’ve decided I shall keep them both—naked in bed.

  1. I grabbed Paperweight a couple weeks ago. I’ll admit, I was first drawn in by the cover. It’s so pretty. Once I read the blurb for the book, I thought it sounded pretty good, too. YA is pretty hit or miss with me any more, but we’ll see. I have a copy of None of the Above, too. I’ve heard soooooo many fantastic things about it. I need to make time to read it soon!

    Happy reading!

Check out my and my 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways!

    • I look forward to both Paperweight and None of the Above. I think they both sound a little different, and that’s (almost) always good IMO.
Have a great weekend, Kim 🙂

    • I saw Paperweight in a few STS posts last week, Genesis, maybe that’s where you’ve seen it before? It will probably take me a few weeks to read and review it 🙂
      Have a great weekend.

    • I was so good last week, but really not so much for this week. I got so many approval e-mails all at once, which is great, but I sometimes wonder why it takes a while before that happens.
Have a great weekend, Melliane 🙂

  2. Yeah, I was really excited about None of the Above, too, Jocelyn, very happy I received an e-ARC 🙂
    Have a great weekend.

  3. None of the Above!! I have that one too 🙂

I didn’t get many books this week (this month I plan to finish the ones I started in 2014 and then read the ones I got for Christmas, not necessarily in that order :P), BUT I got a paperback copy of Acclamation by Vee Hoffman. <3

    Happy reading~

    • I think I found None of the Above when I stalked your LGBT shelf on Goodreads, Cayce 😀 I hope you’ll enjoy your next reads!

  4. Great haul Lexxie! Paperweight especially sounds really interesting and intriguing – I definitely need to add it to my Goodreads TBR.

Thanks for stopping by at my blog earlier and happy reading! 🙂

    • 🙂 I’m glad we can do the GP at a later time, Braine! Enjoy your weekend, and I hope Lord Midnight will appeal to you 😉

  5. Adding The Leveller and None of the Above to by TBR list! So glad you’re reading the graphic novel for GOT, I’m a big fan of the series. Smart move easing yourself into the series I found it really overwhelming when I started. I’d recommend watching an episode or two of the TV show as well, that really helped me get into the book and didn’t spoil too much. Great haul as always and happy reading!

    • Finally someone who’s a big fan of the GoT series, thank you Shan! I have been curious about it for a while, but I think the fact that I HAVE to read it for class makes it more daunting somehow.
      Have a spectacular Sunday 🙂

    • I’m really looking forward to all three of those books, Amber Marie, I’m excited because you found None of the Above to be so good.

  6. Marilyn

Nice haul, Lexxie. Most of these are new to me. I liked The Probability of Violet and Luke. It was a nice continuation to their story.

    • I haven’t read any of those yet, but since The Probability of Violet and Luke was free, I just couldn’t resist 🙂
      Happy New year Marilyn.

  7. Lexxie, you’re going to have to stay away from Netgalley and Edelweiss! 😉 LOL Ah, but you picked up some good looking books. And congrats again on getting the ARC of Holding Strong! Oh, and I giggled over Scorned being on your list. *grins* I really was glad I already had that one.

I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, my friend. It snowed again today – so you know what I did. 😉 **BIG HUGS**

    • LOL, I know, right? But it’s impossible, when I get an e-mail invitation for one book, and then, with the new dashboard I see all those goodies just begging to be requested 😀
Here it’s warming up again, all the snow has melted, and it almost feels spring-like.
I hope you’re enjoying the fireplace and a good book once more, Brandee. *BIG HUGS*

    • I’m really excited about it, too, Christy, and I’ve been seeing both The Leveller and Paperweight around, and they seemed really interesting too. I have no resistance when it comes to books 😀

  8. I was going to get paperweight but I just wasn’t sure, I think I’ll wait to see what you thing of it. I also got The Leveller that one looks really good and I loved the synopsis.
