STS #126 – Bought Borrowed & Bagged #76

Stacking The Shelves, hosted by Tynga’s Reviews is all about the latest additions to your library – virtual or actual, with books that are  bought, borrowed, won or ARCs  you will be reading soon. Bought Borrowed and Bagged is a homage to to Barron’s Books and Baubles from KMM’ Fever series, and is hosted by Braine over at Talk Supe. Without further ado, here’s what I bought, borrowed or bagged this past week:

Lessons in Pleasure cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsLessons in Pleasure by Victoria Dahl

Newlywed Sarah Rose Hood should be blissfully happy. After all, she is married to her beloved, handsome James, who’s provided her with a lovely home, servants, and all the new dresses and books she could wish for. She cannot help but love him—and fear him, just a bit. For Sarah is unused to the attentions of gentlemen, and suddenly living so intimately with a man fills her with anxiety—and also a puzzling longing. Fortunately, her kind, experienced husband plans to awaken Sarah to the joy of giving—and receiving—pleasure, turning her unease to delicious desire, and forging a true union of body and soul…

Prince of the Playhouse cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsPrince of the Playhouse by Tara Lain – for blogtour, received from Enchantress Promos and Design.

Driven by his desire to become a successful fashion designer and concerned with hiding his questionable past, Ru Maitland lets his obsession with action movie star Gray Anson on the big screen replace his social life. Then obsession and reality collide when Ru is asked to design fashion costumes for a special performance of Hamlet at the Playhouse in Laguna starring none other than Gray Anson. Gray turns out to be a compelling mix of shy and brash and, despite a high profile engagement to a female socialite, the signals Gray sends Ru have his libido doing the salsa.
Gray Anson has what most people only dream of—great wealth, huge fame, a job he loves. For that, he’s given up any semblance of privacy and the right to say no to the thousands of people who depend on him and the millions who love him. He sees everything he’s ever wanted just outside the bubble of his life, but how can he make the compromises needed to embrace it? When Ru’s shady past crashes into Gray’s paparazzi-haunted present, both men have to learn that sometimes the only acceptable compromise is the truth.

Waylaid cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsWaylaid by Kim Harrison

Worlds collide when Rachel Morgan of The Hollows meets Peri Reed of The Drafter in this exciting new short story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison.
The paranormal and the futuristic meet in this thrilling novella featuring your favorite badass heroines from two of “the amazingly gifted” (RT Book Reviews) Kim Harrison’s most beloved series: the Hollows and the Peri Reed Chronicles. The magic of the Hollows runs full force into the technological sophistication of The Drafter when a device capable of carrying a city’s data stream pulls Rachel, the bounty hunter witch of the Hollows, between realities, marooning her in a world where the supernatural holds no sway. To get Rachel and Jenks home, Peri, the dangerous renegade of 2030, must decide what will chart her future: her blind trust in those who grant her power, or her intuition telling her to believe.

The Life of the World to Come cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsThe Life of the World to Come by Dan Cluchey

Leo Brice is dead, in a sense (not the traditional one). When the neurotic law student meets his cosmic match in Fiona Haeberle, an impulsive spirit and burgeoning soap star, all seems well—the two fall fast in love, and spend three years navigating their twenties in wide-eyed wonder. But once the fantastical woman who had defined his future bolts to pursue a fantasy life of her own, Leo is forced to come to terms with a reality that more closely resembles an epilogue than the story he’d hoped it might be. Now a junior death row advocate, Leo immerses himself in the esoteric world of his condemned client, a born-again Georgia inmate named Michael Tiegs. As both men become consumed by the question of an afterlife—and as Leo becomes increasingly confused by his own future and past—Tiegs’ fate hangs in the balance. Leaning on his friends and grappling with his memories, Leo must try to save a client who may not want to be saved after all, even as he struggles to confront the prospect of his own mortality.
At once obsessively readable, philosophically probing, and verbally acrobatic, The Life of the World to Come announces Dan Cluchey as a fresh new voice in fiction.

Reckless Angel cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsReckless Angel by Maggie Shayne was free for kindle, so I had to click it!

Toni del Rio specialized in turning real-life crime into bestselling fiction, and she was aware that danger came with the territory. This time, however, she was in over her head. While researching the New York underworld for her latest book, she’d witnessed a mob hit. Now a thug was pointing a gun at her in a shadowy alley, and she knew she was a goner. . .
Undercover FBI agent Nick Manelli wasn’t about to kill anyone, but if he didn’t hide the woman immediately, they would both be dead. So he brought her to the only haven he knew — his place.
Alone with Nick in close quarters, Toni couldn’t help fantasizing about her rugged captor — and the desire, she soon discovered, was mutual. . .

Poison Study cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsPoison Study by Maria V. Snyder was only $1.99, and I have been lusting after this story since forever!

Murder, mayhem and magic…

Locked in a coffin-like darkness, there is nothing to distract me from my memories of killing Reyad. He deserved to die—but according to the law, so do I. Here in Ixia, the punishment for murder is death. And now I wait for the hangman’s noose.

But the same law that condemns me may also save me. Ixia’s food taster—chosen to ensure that the Commander’s food is not poisoned—has died. And by law, the next prisoner who is scheduled to be executed—me—must be offered the position.

The Confessions cover - (un)Conventional BookviewsThe Confessions by Tiffany Reisz

Three Sinners. Three confessions. And all the dirty little secrets you could possibly desire…

Father Stuart Ballard has been Marcus Stearns’ confessor since the young Jesuit was only eighteen years old. He thought he’d heard every sin the boy had to confess until Marcus uttered those three fateful words: “I met Eleanor.”

    • I discovered some of these in an e-mail from Netgalley, and I thought the premise sounded really interesting 🙂 Victoria Dahl is one of my favorite authors, and I troll netgalley and elsewhere for her books constantly 😀
      Thanks for stopping by, Hayley.

  1. I read Poison Study a few years back and thought it was a decent read, despite not being my usual genre. It was well written with good characters. I didn’t continue with it as I didn’t like the blurb for book two. Hope you enjoy it and your other books!

  2. Great picks! Of course, I just had to grab the Maggie Shayne freebie! I kind of wanted to request the Kim Harrison story but I have finished The Hollows or read the other series so I will try to read it once I catch up instead. Have a great week Lexxie!

  3. Hi Lexxie,

your haul is impressive though I don´ t know any of those authors or titles, except for Maggie Shayne. Sad her “Reckless Angel” doesn´t seem to be available in my country at the moment. Well, guess I´ll have to wait then *smile*
    best wishes

  4. I’ve owned a copy of Poison Study for years now I think, and I have yet to read it. Sigh. I know I’ll love it too! Hopefully, you’ll read it soon and motivate me to get going already LOL! All the rest of your lovely haul here is new to me books but I hope you love them all! Happy weekend Lexxie and enjoy your goodies ♥

    • Ha! I know that feeling, Micheline. I think I’d get panicked if I started looking at the purchase date of many of the books hiding on my kindle. Maybe I will get to read Poison Study soon, and that will make you need it, too 😉

  5. I’m really curious about the Kim Harrison novella. I’m not sure how I feel about the crossover. Those two worlds don’t feel like they were ever meant to be together. I bought Confessions too, but I haven’t read it yet. I’m trying to stick to reading for the TBR challenge. The others sound interesting too.

  6. Great haul this week. The only one of these I have heard of is Poison Study, which is one that I have read and really enjoyed myself. Still need to continue that series though, I only got to book two. I hope you enjoy them all 🙂 Here’s my STS

  7. You have some mighty-fine looking books on your list this week, Lexxie. I, of course, got Prince of the Playhouse as well and I can’t wait to read it! And chat with you about it! 🙂 I’m excited you got the new ones from Dahl and Harrison! There’s only one on your list that makes me mutter under my breath…you’ll figure out which one and why soon… o_O
I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend! We spent yesterday traveling between competitions. It snowed up here for 2 days but it’s sunny today. Beautiful, if a chilly 10 degrees F! **BIG HUGS**

    • I’m really looking forward to Prince of the Playhouse 🙂 Tara always manages to make me think a bit harder about things.
I’m really excited about Dahl and Harrison… and why would you mutter under your breath? *curious*
I love it when there’s snow on the ground and the sun in the sky! It’s so beautiful 🙂 Have a great week, my dear! *BIG HUGS*
