Top Ten Tuesday – Top Ten paranormal creatures

This week on Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie! And I have chosen to share my Top Ten Paranormal creatures – and which character made me pick that particular paranormal creature. Top Ten Tuesdays is a fun meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we share our excitement for books, and I really like how this meme makes me think about the books I read, why I read them, and who to recommend my favorite reads to. So, here we go :

As usual, my list is in no particular order :

1) Vampires!! I love vampires, because they add a certain danger to a narrative, they can be mean, they are beautiful (at least in contemporary books), and they can be extremely charming when they want to. I have two favorite vampires, that have made me read the series (and spin-offs) they are a part of. One is Eric Northman from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series, the last book in that series, Dead Ever After was released earlier in May, and I enjoyed it, even if Eric was a lot less present than in prior books. I also really love Bones from Jeaniene Frost’s Nighthuntress series. He is a British vampire, and I love everything about him – he’s loyal, funny, sexy and cares about Cat more than anything in the world. I loved One Grave at a Time, and I look forward to Up From the Grave – which is due for release in January 2014.

2) Wherewolves. They can change from human to wolf in a few seconds when they need to, either to fight or to sniff something (or someone) out, or just to run faster. All the different weres in Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series are truly awesome, and I love how loyal and fierce they all are!

3) Faeries. I have always loved fairytales with their strange creatures, and now, there are several really good series with faeries as the main characters. I especially love Julie Kagawa’s Iron Fey series, because, hey, we get to know both Puck and Ash! Plus, there is the whole thing about iron and faeries… I also loved Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely series for her different take on faeries, and how they came to power.

4) Angels. They can be so removed from the world in a way, and at the same time, they are (at least supposedly) here to protect the world. I love Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series, because the angels there aren’t solely good. They have flaws, and they dont’ work alone. They are also there for the world to see, and everybody knows they exist.

5) Ghosts. I love a creepy ghost story, where I am almost afraid to turn the page, when I hold my breath while reading for fear of what will happen next. Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood is a book like that! And I love that the scary ghost is a girl!

6) Dragons. Who doesn’t love dragons, right? I especially have a soft spot for Buruu in Jay Kristoff’s Stormdancer. And I just can’t wait to get my hands on Kinslayer which is the second book in The Lotus War. The world building is great, the heroine is a young girl who is never afraid to fight, both with her fists and her wit, and I just can never guess where the story will go next.

7) Witches. They always have something up their sleave, and it’s impossible to know what their powers are if they don’t want to share it. I love reading about different spells, how the witches need knowledge as well as talent, and I think part of this is also because of how women were prosecuted in old times for being witches. I feel like those women are vindicated (at least a little bit) by having strong female characters be smart and crafty witches. One of my favorite witch series is Cin Craven by Jenna Maclaine. Cin is a very different kind of witch, and I love reading about her progress in a world she didn’t know much about at the start. Another witch I love is Chess from Stacia Kane’s Downside Ghosts series. She is both strong and weak at the same time. Broken, but never completely. I am really looking forward to the next Downside Ghosts book, which doesn’t have a title yet, but is scheduled for release in 2013.

8) Darkhunters. Yup, they only exist in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s series of the same name. They are given a new chance at a kind of life after they die an awful death, often because they are betrayed by someone they love. They are then almost immortal, and their job is to keep human-kind safe from everything that goes bump in the night. Vampires, demons, other creatures we can’t even completely imagine.

9) Deities. Quite a few books have some kind of deities in them, but again, I have to mention Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Darkhunter series, especially the book called Acheron. Acheron is an Appolyonian God (and he’s from Atlantis!) he’s the Darkhunters’ boss, but Artemis (yes, the Greek Goddess) is pulling his strings. I love the way the mythology is weaved into the fabric of the story throughout the entire series.

10) Last but not least, I love to read about other kinds of shapeshifters – those who can choose what they will change into. They aren’t stuck as ‘only’ a wolf, a bear, a tiger or something else. Each time they change, they imagine what they want to change into, and voilà. It’s a little embarrassing, but I can’t think of a specific shapeshifter now, apart from Sam in the Sookie Stackhouse series. And when I started writing my number ten, it wasn’t him who was on my mind. Oh well.

What about you? What did you choose for your Top Ten freebie? I look forward to reading all about it!

Thanks for stopping by. Have a terrific Tuesday 🙂

    • I love the paranormal exactly because it is just impossible in real life 🙂
Thanks for stopping by Ciska 🙂

Thanks for stopping by Ciska 🙂

    • The thing with vampires, though, is that they don’t have to be like Bram Stoker’s vampire… That’s one of the things I love with vampire stories, the imagination of an author to make them something unexpected…

Thanks for stopping by, Alise 🙂

    • oh, Yum, those Darkhunters are definitely worth looking into!

Thanks for stopping by Liesel 🙂 Happy reading!

  1. This is a great list. I haven’t read any Sherrilyn Kenyon books so I had no idea what a darkhunter is. Ghosts are my favorite and even if they have changed a LOT over time, I will always love vampires. 🙂

    • Those Darkhunters are really great! And since they are different from other paranormal creatures, it makes it even more interesting.

      Yeah, I agree, those vampires… 🙂

Thanks for stopping by Stacy 🙂

    • Hi Chlesea 🙂 That means I need to find your TBR so I can find more books to add to mine 😉

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Love your top ten. I would have to put werewolves at the top of my list as they are my favorite. Although I prefer mine scary as in horror novels, but I don’t mine the handsome hunk kind either!! (Alcede from Sookie Stakehouse!)Have you ever read Molly Harper’s Naked Werewolf series! Love it!!

Vampires: Molly Harper’s Nice Girl series, Sookie Stackhouse, and of course the Night Hunteress series!

Witches are okay but I don’t have a favorite.

Some darker types like in the book Grave Intentions by Lori Sjoberg. (He was a grim reaper)

Not big on fairies but now and then I don’t mind reading a book on one.

I do like ones about Gods/Goddesses sort of like The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter.

LOVE a good ghost story but can’t find enough that scare me the way I want them too…LOL. I did like Anna Dressed in Blood though!

    Happy Reading!

    • Yum about a grim reaper Stormi! I need to check that book out!

And I haven’t read the Goddess Test yet. I need to read the 2nd Anna book – I just haven’t gotten to it yet.

Thanks for stopping by 🙂 Happy reading right back at you!

  3. Nice list! I love all the creatures/beings on it.

Vampires…even Bram Stoker’s Dracula had the ability to make himself appear handsome.

Dragons…Christopher Paolini’s Dragon Rider series is very good. Only 4 books. Don’t let the movie, Eragon, fool you…the books are outstanding with detail.

Now on to shapeshifters…Tonks from the Harry Potter series was a morphamagus. Not only could she change her entire shape when she wanted to, but could shift just part. There is a great dinner scene where she is entertaining Harry and his friends by shifting the shape of her nose. I must confess, like you there is another shifter tugging at the corner of my brain just out of sight. [I can think of a couple comic book shifters…Mystique of X-men fame and the Wonder Twins.]

    • Hi Xyra 🙂 thanks for stopping by today!

You know… I still haven’t read HP *hides behind the couch* I do have all the books on my kindle, though. I just want to make sure I have the time to just read them all in more or less one go once I start, now that I’m already late to the party.

If I think of the other shifter I have at the tip of my brain, I’ll let you know!

    • Yeah, I needed more than 10 to include demons – I agree though, I love demons! Have you read The Demon’s Lexicon? Awesome 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by Jennifer.

    • Ash is so awesome! Can you imagine being that old? I love angles too, do you have any recs? I like my angels to be a little bit bad, though.. not all goody-two-shoes 😉

      Thanks for stoping by Traci!

      • I like my angels a little on the bad side too! Here’s a some for you to check out: JR Ward’s The Fallen Angels series and Kendra Leigh Castle’s Hearts of the Fallen Series (Goodreads lists The Demon’s Song as #1 but that’s because she went to a different publisher. The first is Renegade Angel and the other is a novella in Vacation with a Vampire anthology). Kendra’s Dark Dynasties is a unique vamp/shifter series.

        • I love JR Ward’s The Fallen Angels – they are pretty awesome! I haven’t heard of Kendra Leigh Castle, but I’ll check out her books on Goodreads right now.

          Thanks for the recs 🙂

    • Yum, I think I fell even more in love with Eric because of Alex Skarsgaard… He is one fine… man 😉

Thanks for stopping by Cayce 🙂 Happy reading.

        • I know – I can’t wait for more True Blood! I need to watch last year’s season as well – iTunes is no fun when it comes to that show! I haven’t seen Bill Skarsgaard… *runs to google* 🙂

  4. Loved this topic Lexxie! And I agree with you on all of them! Though I do find myself needing to alternate between ‘types’. I can’t do vampire book after vampire book. Gotta shake it up! Great list! And now I have some new series to look into!

Thanks for stopping by my TTT!

    • YAY – I love it when someone starts a new series based on something I posted about. I hope you’ll like whatever it is you’ve decided to pick up.

      Thanks for stopping by Jessica.

  5. I love your list, Lexxie. 😉 I was wondering how you were going to come up with 10 but you did it! And I’ve read almost every series you listed (well, not the complete series…) Have you read Thea Harrison’s Elder Races series? It has lots of supernaturals but the first one, Dragon Bound, has one HOT dragon! 😉 Kendra Leigh Castle’s Dark Dynasty series has yummy paranormal creatures. 🙂 And Sylvia Day’s Renegade Angels series is fabulous! Archangels, fallen angels, shifters, oh my! 🙂

I know, I know…I just added more to your TBR. 😉

    • Nope, I haven’t read the Elder Races series… you keep making me add books, and you love it, don’t you?

I haven’t read Renegade Angels or Dark Dynasty either…

Thanks so much for stopping by, and twisting my arm until I added yet more books 😉

  6. I wish I could pinpoint my reluctance to pick up werewolf books. I was dodging vampire books for the longest, until I read Vampire Empire.

    Awesome list!

    • Maybe you just need the right were-animal book? Just like with vampires, there are several different kinds, and I have to admit I don’t love all of them 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by Lyn!
