Up Close and (un)Conventional ย – Reviewing

Welcome to this week’s Up Close and (un)Conventional. This is where I discuss both things that have to do with reading and blogging, and things that just have to do with life in general. This week, I want to chat a little bit about reviewing. I review here on my blog, of course, that’s my main place when it comes to all things bookish. There are other places I send my reviews to as well, though, and I’m curious about how other bloggers go about this – that is – if you review anywhere else than on your blog.

I have the UBB plugin with the possibility to send my full or partial review to Goodreads as soon as it’s published here. I always make sure everything I do is published here on the blog first, due to copyright. Most of my reviews, I also publish on Amazon, in order to make sure the authors get some visibility over there as well. And for the longest time, I copy-pasted my reviews to Booklikes. When my reviews are published, I also link them directly (and with a plugin) to Twitter, Facebook and Google+.

Booklikes has been very quiet lately, though, and so I kind of haven’t felt like spending the time to copy-paste my reviews over there. Even if I have a lot of followers, I don’t really get a lot of feedback over there, either. Which brings me to the second part of this post – feedback we get on those pesky reviews we spend time on writing and publishing here, there and everywhere. I get most of my feedback right here, and also quite a bit on Goodreads. Funnily enough, I also get quite a few comments on my review links on Facebook – which can also start some great conversations.

How do you go about your reviewing? Do you systematically post your reviews somewhere else than your blog? Do you have as much fun with review interactions elsewhere?

Thanks for stopping by today! Have a fabulous Friday and happy reading ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. I’m terrible at cross posting to Goodreads or anywhere else, although I’m going to try and do more of it. And I’m getting a little better at promoting on Twitter. ๐Ÿ™‚ But for me it’s mostly my blog, although I think a lot (most?) book bloggers crosspost more than I do…

    Great topic! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I wouldn’t have cross-posted to Goodreads if it weren’t for my plugin, Greg. Now, it goes there automatically, and that certainly helps ๐Ÿ™‚ Most of my interactions happen here and on other blogs, plus quite a bit on Facebook as well.

  2. I always post on Good Reads and Amazon. I also tweet about it. I think Carmel then posts them on Pinterest or at least she used to. I get most of my comments on RabidReads.com, and only a few comments on the reviews I post on Puretextuality.com. I get so far behind on my commenting and I am sorry! Interesting post!

    • I have seen some people who post one line plus a link to their review on instagram… I haven’t done that before, though, and I’m not sure if I really want to start dong that as I’m doing other things on insta.
Getting behind of commenting is a struggle for us all, Lorna! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I always post on Goodreads and Amazon, at least for my full reviews. (Sometimes I post mini ones if I just have one or two things to say on GRs that I don’t post on my blog.) I also get the most interaction on my blog it seems, but I occasionally get comments on GR. Once or twice I’ve gotten a comment on Amazon, but that’s rare. I don’t use FB for my blog, but I do post links to Twitter, Pinterest, and Tumblr, but the first two aren’t particularly conducive to discussions, and I suck at Tumblr lol, so usually no interaction there. I don’t even have an account for any other bookish websites because I can only keep up with so many, and I figure GR and Amazon is good enough.

    • Yeah, I do have a few very short (mostly DNF) reviews that are only up on Goodreads as well, Kristen. And I love blog interactions ๐Ÿ™‚
I suck at Tumblr so much I actually forgot to mention it in my post ๐Ÿ˜€ GR and Amazon probably do make sure that authors / books get enough exposure.

  4. I’m an associate reviewer and not a blog owner, but I do crosspost. My reviews are for the blog, but they usually are up first at GoodReads and Amazon because I send to Shari to add them in where she likes. I have GoodReads set up so that a link is sent to Facebook and Twitter. I also post a link to Pinterest. If I purchased the book at a seller that is not Amazon then I post at that site as well.
I have a Booklikes account, but I’ve let it go idle for months.

Most reactions to my reviews come at the blog and on GoodReads, but occasionally I get responses on FB and Twitter.

    • That’s a good point, Sophia Rose. I didn’t think about co-bloggers and associate reviewers. I did that in the very beginning, and I had no say in when my review would be posted.
My Goodreads account posts status updates to Twitter and Facebook. And I don’t have Pinterest – which is probably a good thing, as I get slightly obsessed with beautiful pictures ๐Ÿ˜€

  5. Lekeisha
    Twitter:

Whenever a review posts on my blog, it also posts on Twitter, Tumblr, and Google+. I try to make sure to update my Goodreads reviews often, and cross post to Amazon as well.

    • The one thing I don’t really enjoy with Amazon is the way some authors I enjoy seem to have an anti-fanbase, and as soon as I post a review for one of their books, it gets a whole lot of downvotes. Even if my review is balanced and not 5 stars. I still do my copy-paste over there, especially for self-published authors, as I know they need reviews to be visible over there.

  6. I use the UBB to post directly to Goodreads otherwise I would forget. I do Amazon reviews maybe once or twice a week. I post my blog review links to Twitter and Facebook. I get good interaction on the blog and some on Goodreads.

  7. I automatically cross post on Goodreads, Amazon, and NetGalley, if appropriate. First Goodreads, then my blog, then Amazon, etc.

I don’t know anything about Booklikes.

My posts are automatically posted on Facebook, too, via Networked Blogs.

I get more responses on Goodreads and my blog.

I don’t have any plug-ins. That sounds handy. I just copy and paste.

    Great post!

    • Yes, of course, Netgalley or Edelweiss if that’s where I got my eARC from, you’re absolutely right, Laurel-Rain. I’m not sure how I forgot about those ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you use wordpress for your self-hosted blog, you can have a lot of great plugins, but not for blogger… It is very handy to have my review automatically sent to Goodreads once it’s published here ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Normally I mostly just post reviews mainly on my site and then Goodreads and Librarything. I do post it automatically–the link—to twitter and facebook. But don’t get much interaction on there. I do love the UBB plugin and how versatile it is.

  9. I usually post a quick review on goodreads as soon as I finish reading so I don’t forget things. Then I will write up my full review on the blog. Then I copy and paste that into amazon and iBooks. I use coschedule to post to FB, twitter, and pinterest once my blog post is live. Thats my current strategy! It has worked pretty well for me. I also use the ARC tracker from Brittney at book bumblings blog to keep myself organized! Its GREAT!

  10. I review mainly for my blog, but will post on Goodreads and amazon. I might remember to send it to twitter but might not. I don’t really do booklikes at all now and haven’t been there for a long time or tsu.

I don’t always get comments on my blog so I don’t expect to get comments on any of the other places I post I just do it to give the author some free promotion for their books.

  11. The first place my review goes is on my blog. A few days after that I cross-post to Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Netgalley where applicable. Occasionally I’ll post elsewhere if the author, tour co, etc. asks for it.

  12. Sometimes I have full reviews on Goodreads, but a lot of the time, I just put a star rating or give a little thought. I only post on Amazon if I’m expressly asked too, but I know I should try and do it more! I just find that it can take time and I know i’d get behind and be too stressed about it. I do like sharing reviews on Twitter though -I think I get people reading it that way, even if they don’t comment, because they’ll like the post or something.

    • I do that as soon as I finish reading, Lauren, and I think I would have left it at that if I didn’t have that plugin that shares my full review if I want it ti.
You’re right about getting people to read our reviews through both Twitter and Facebook, I have noticed quite a lot of hits through both.

  13. I always write my review on Goodreads first, cross post it on amazon, B&N and Kobo if the book si there and then schedule it on my blog. Not sure if it matters it isn’t on my blog first, but I prefer posting my review everywhere as soon as I have written it as that’s easiest for me and part of my routine now.

I share the link to my blog reviews on FB, twitter, Google+ and Pinterest. Most comments I get on my blog, rarely on goodreads or amazon. And hardly ever on social media either. I love hearing what people think of my reviews and getting interactions on them. Even though I hardly ever get interactions anywhere except for my blog I still like sharing my review where I can. Great post Lexxie!

    • I don’t think it matters if your review isn’t on your blog first, Lola, however, if someone copied and pasted your review to their own blog, it might be a bit more difficult for you to prove that your review is really yours. I’ve seen some really strange things, and people really don’t care if they plagiarize reviews or parts of reviews…

I think that sharing can bring new people to our blogs, and so then we may get comments on our blog rather than somewhere else, too.

Thanks for stopping by, Lola ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. I mostly post on my blog and then a few lines on Goodreads. But that is about it. I don’t trust Amazon enough to post reviews over there.

    • I do post on Amazon, especially when it comes to indie authors. I don’t do that as soon as my review is published on my blog, though, I do it in batches.
The only ‘interactions’ I get on amazon is likes or downvotes, though…
      Thanks for stopping by, Lyn.

  15. I review on my blog first. It automatically pushes a link to Facebook, Twitter and Google. When I get around to it, I cross-post my review to Goodreads and Amazon. If it is a NetGalley book, I also take care of a review there.

In all honesty, I don’t get very much interaction about my reviews at all. I do get a lot of helpful “likes” or whatever on Amazon that my reviews are helpful to others.

    • The fact that some of the links can be sent out automatically helps save time, and it also makes our posts more visible, Charlie ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m glad mine get automatically pushed to Goodreads, too – it makes sure my reviews are over there as well.

  16. If I will be giving a book a low rating, then I just post a short review on both Amazon & Goodreads.

If I like the book, then I:
–Do a full review with the publisher’s summary and bonus material (if I can get it) on my blog (at Booklikes).
–Post the full review, without the summary or bonus material, on Goodreads with a link to my blog at the top.
–Post the Goodreads review without the link on Amazon, and on Audible or Downpour if I got the book from them.
–Post it to Twitter, Facebook & Google+

I am still very new (or maybe just bad at it) so I don’t get very many comments on my reviews; when I do, they are on my blog.

My Most Recent Discussion: Hasn’t Killed Me Yet: Living with Chronic TBR Overflow

    • I actually also post a full review for the low ratings on my blog, but not necessarily for DNF books.

I’m thinking that it’s the fact that you’re very new that makes it so that you don’t get a lot of comments, because there are so many blogs out there you have to find a way to be visible so people know to check out your blog more often ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m sure you’ll get more comments as you continue.

  17. I used to copy/paste all my reviews to everywhere like Shelfari, Library Thing, GR & Amazon. Then Amazon got very difficult with it’s review policies. Even with reviews that are proper, they still find something to censure it. Ain’t nobody got time for that! I just do Blog and GR now, a super short review for the latter, and Amazon only when the author reminds me. lol

  18. I find cross posting the worst so I suck at it. Am trying to be better at goodreads though, and I did not know there was a plugin! I have to get that! Can you tell me any more about it?

    • The plugin is made by Ashley @ Nosegraze, and it’s called the Ultimate Book Blogger (UBB). It does more than just send my stuff directly to Goodreads, too, it automates my review indexes / archives, ratings and so on. Let me know if you have specific questions, and also know that Ashley is very helpful (and quick) with replies to questions!

  19. I started out on GR, but once I started the blog my reiews always post there first. Then I C&P to GR. I think I’ll try using the UBB plugin for it next review. Just have to figure out how to set it up. I very rarely post on Amazon b/c I lazy. lol.

  20. Interesting topic Lexxie^^ I post my reviews on the blog first, my blog then automatically shares on twitter. Then I post them on GR and sometimes on FB. I keep meaning to post them on Amazon, but just thinking about it now makes me wonder where to start, I get overwhelmed and just never end up going any further than that LOL! I don’t get much interaction on BookLikes either so I don’t do much there…

  21. I always post first to my blog as well, Lexxie, and then to Goodreads. I *try* to remember to post to Amazon and B&N (always do when I read an ARC) but sometimes I forget. I need to create a system to make sure I always post everywhere…I used to. Of course, that was before Amazon started removing my reviews for certain authors. :/ I get most of my comments on my blog and on GR…sometimes Facebook. I never added BookLikes to my list though…it was too overwhelming to me to add yet another place to post. Great topic, my dear! *BIG HUGS*

  22. I am not very good at methodically sharing my reviews around. I post on goodreads, then pop that onto my blog. I guess I should figure out how to do it the other way around, but since I don’t post daily reviews, I don’t want to forget or lose track of them. I also share via the Kid Lit Blog Hop monthly. If Barnes and Noble has sent me an email about reviewing a book, I keep the email until I’ve read the book and add the review there as well.
