LIFE IN THE FAST LANE
Racing cars is in Kerri Hart's blood--literally, since it's the family business. But Hart Racing is in dire financial straits, and as the only female rookie driver, Kerri's sponsorship offers always tend to be of the unzipped racing-suit variety. It's a message she'd rather not sell to her young fans. But how can she afford not to?

LOVE ON OVERDRIVE
Ranger Colt knows how to make a woman's heart race. But when his voice pops up on Kerri's headset--while she's in mid-tailspin--she's in no mood for his charms. Colt Hardware now has a significant stake in the Hart family business, and Kerri has no choice but to work with him. But when her ex-boyfriend makes a very public, tabloid-fodder scene that threatens to tarnish her image, it's Ranger who comes to the rescue. Pretending to be engaged to generate some good publicity seems like a good plan. In fact, it works--all too well. What begins as a ruse is revving up to feel a whole lot like the real thing. Will Kerri and Ranger's fake-lationship take a wild turn. . .and lead them toward the finish?

In the Fast Lane is definitely a very hot romance, and having the heroine being a race-car drive just made her all the more interesting.

My In the Fast Lane review:

This story almost started with a bang, but Kerri was a good enough driver to avoid the worst, and save both her car, herself, and the crazy guy running across the track during a trial run. Just after stopping her car, a new voice comes over her comm and she learns that Ranger Colt has bought most of her family’s business that has to do with the race team. Upset is too tame a word, because Kerri is a fire-cracker of a woman, and that is one of the reasons I enjoyed In the Fast Lane so much.

A short, quick read, quite fast paced with both racing, and romance involved, Ranger and Kerri both had to make some adjustments to their plans when things happened neither of them had seen coming. In the Fast Lane had a lot of humor, sexy scenes and fast driving, and the one thing that made me enjoy it less than I could have was the instant attraction between Kerri and Ranger. It would have made sense to me if it had only been a physical attraction, but it grew very quickly to become more emotional than that.

Reading about a female character who had to carve her place into a male-dominated world was great, and I thought it was very well done all the fights Kerri had to fight in order to be taken seriously on the race course, and off of it. In the Fast Lane was well written, in third person point of view and with a lot of dialogues to make the characters’ voices shine through. Even in such a short story, the characters did develop and change; both the two main characters, and especially Kerri’s family were fleshed out, and I look forward to reading Shifting Gears in the fall!

Some of my favorite In the Fast Lane quotes:

Kerri let out a long breath. She’d find another sponsor after she won tomorrow’s race – one that didn’t ask her to wear a push-up bra and lipstick just because she was the only woman driver in the pack.

He almost wished she’d left it on. It took him a moment to realize that her hazel eyes had gone dark green, intensely dark. She lifter her chin just enough to make it appear as though she were looking down on him, even though she had to be at least half a foot shorter.

She blinked at hime. “Ranger Colt? That’s your real name?”
Was this woman really giving him shit about his name? He’d seen her stats on the profile sheet in the portfolio. Kerri Lorettalynn Hart wasn’t in a position to throw stones.

Reading this book contributed to these challenges:

  1. I like the sound of Kerri, Lexxie. A firecracker heroine always makes for good reading, and that she’s trying to carve her place in a male-dominated world makes it even better. I understand what you’re saying about the insta-attraction. I think sometimes it works in a story but it doesn’t seem to have here. But I’m glad you enjoyed it enough to continue the series. 🙂

I hope you have a terrific Tuesday, my dear. **BIG HUGS**

Bummer about the insta-attraction – without that, this sounds just about perfect! Which means it’s so going on my tbr of course 😀 I got giddy when you said she’s a racecar driver and I love that her having to make her place in a male-dominated profession is a central theme. My kind of lady for sure! Great review Lexxie!

Hope you’re having a great vacation (you’re still there right?) and that your paper writing is going well!
