Review: Spectacle – Rachel Vincent

Spectacle was a dark, yet beautiful story. Where the cryptids were taken from relative freedom to a prison more horrible than even their worst nightmares could conjure. Spectacle was even darker than Menagerie, because Delilah and her companions had managed to live for a while in relative freedom only to be caught by someone far worse than Metzger. At first, Gallagher is taken to a human prison, but this only makes Delilah’s anxiety worse, as she hasn’t had any news from him since she and some of the other female cryptids from the menagerie were taken to their new dormitory. I felt every anxious and fearful feeling Delilah and the others felt, and I have to admit that during Spectacle, my […]

Review: Menagerie – Rachel Vincent

Review: Menagerie – Rachel Vincent

On the surface, Menagerie is the story of creatures that are not completely human, living in a sort of traveling zoo. However, if we scratch even lightly, right underneath that surface is a tale about morals, ethics, respect and justice. My Menagerie review: Menagerie started out as a cute story, complete with a class of fifth-graders visiting a traveling menagerie for a field-trip. Delilah was a little uneasy with some of the creatures of the exhibit, especially one in which there were three young girls sitting on the ground in a cage in the petting zoo. Fast forward to Delilah’s 25th birthday, and she’s back in the same menagerie, with her best friend and both of their boyfriends. And this […]

Review: The Stars Never Rise – Rachel Vincent

Review: The Stars Never Rise – Rachel Vincent

Quite fast paced, and set in a very bleak future, The Stars Never Rise is a solid start to Vincent’s new series. My The Stars Never Rise review: At the beginning of The Stars Never Rise, I thought the story had similarities to one of my favorite urban fantasy series Downside Ghosts. Because the it is set in the future, after a big battle, and the church now rules the remaining humans. Nina, the main character, goes to school, and wants to enter the church to become a teacher. However, she also often breaks the rules – even if most of the time that is to keep herself and her younger sister Mellie alive – and she lies by omission […]

Review: With All My Soul (Soul Screamers #7) – Rachel Vincent

Review: With All My Soul (Soul Screamers #7) – Rachel Vincent

With All My Soul wraps up the Soul Screamers series pretty neatly, actually almost a little bit too neatly for my taste. I really loved this whole series, but some of the things that happened in With All My Soul just seemed a little like the easy way out when it comes to resolving some problems, and not actually telling enough of the planning to the readers. I’m sure the plan was to sweep us off our feet with Kaylee’s courage and smarts, but I ended up feeling a little bit cheated in the very end. As I said, everything gets neatly wrapped up, and while I get why Kaylee did what she did to save people, I guess I […]

Review: Shadow Bound (Unbound #2) – Rachel Vincent

Review: Shadow Bound (Unbound #2) – Rachel Vincent

Shadow Bound really built on the Blood Bound’s story, and the character development Kori went through was quite amazing. Of course, she was only a side character in the first book, and here, she was the heroine, but it was still easy to see how she changed, and how she became completely willing to fight for what she thought was right.   Subscribe to Blog via Email Enter your email address to subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email. Review: Before I Wake (Soul Screamers #6) – Rachel Vincent

Review: Before I Wake (Soul Screamers #6) – Rachel Vincent

Before I Wake had absolutely everything I could have wanted to make it a great book! Kaylee finally figuring out what it means to be an extractor as well as a bean sidhe, Tod and Kaylee growing closer, and Kaylee fighting with all she has to save her friends and family. Before I wake is exciting, and at the same time very sweet and romantic. Filled with action and fast paced, I could not click ‘next page’ quick enough. When Kaylee returns to school, it is very difficult for her to deal with all the attention. Nash and Sabine do not want to talk to her, and the only real friend she has in school is Em. The contrast between […]
