Review: Select – Marit Weisenberg

Review: Select – Marit Weisenberg

Select is an original story about a people that is more evolved than the rest of us. It involves how difficult it can be to fit in, and how not to make the general population know too much. Story: Julia and her family, and the other Select are hiding in plain sight. But they know they don’t have long before they have to move once more. In the past, this people was in hiding as tribes in the Amazon jungle, or far away from civilization. Now, they live in the city, but in the best part of it. Only, Julia’s father, their leader, has started to make some changes. These changes involves Julia and other youths not having the right […]

Review: Blood and Ink – Stephen Davies

Review: Blood and Ink – Stephen Davies

Blood and Ink mesmerised me! Very well done, mixing actual events and fiction, showing the differences in muslim faiths, how some are stricter than others, and what was done by a people to rise against their oppressors. Story: I was transported by Blood and Ink, through the way it unfolded two sides of a story. How it showed two sides of a war. Two sides of a religion. How good and bad can be blurred, and how difficult it is to change sides once a stance is taken. Because the story is based on true events, I think it was very realistic. Even ficionalised history can be well done, and I found the way everything unfolded to be enlightening. Taking […]

Review: Everything, Everything – Nicola Yoon

Review: Everything, Everything – Nicola Yoon

Everything, Everything is quite beautifully written, but there were some things that I guessed when I was only a few pages in… and that kind of spoiled me – just like Madeline’s spoiler reviews. Story: Madeline has lived apart from the world for as long as she can remember. Her dad and her brother died in a car accident when she was young, so it’s just her, her mom and Carla. When the new neighbours move in, Madeline starts observing them, and she quickly realizes that the dad is abusive, the two teen-aged children are angry, and the mom is trying to keep the peace. Madeline spent most of her time reading – and writing spoiler reviews. Beware – if […]

Review: A Tragic Kind of Wonderful – Eric Lindstrom

Review: A Tragic Kind of Wonderful – Eric Lindstrom

A Tragic Kind of Wonderful had my whole body in knots. Mel made my heart break so badly, and at the same time I’m so happy to have met her – to get a glimpse into how life might be for someone who suffers from bipolar disorder. Story: After a horrible shock, Mel became so sick she couldn’t go to school for several months. Afterwards, though, she never shared with her friends the actual reasons for not coming to school. She didn’t want anyone to think she was weird. Or different. Or someone they might not want to spend their time with – so she stayed away from them instead. She got new friends, though and that works well for […]

Review: All Things New – Lauren Miller

Review: All Things New – Lauren Miller

All Things New deals with a character who has suffered from panic attacks ever since her parents’ divorce. Story: All Things New is an important book, as it deals with panic and mental disorders in teenagers. There were some aspects of the book that I found extremely good, and others I could have done without. The ‘angel’ aspect did not work for me. Nor did the fact that the psychiatrists in this book were all smirking, pill-pushing individuals. I also think I would have liked it more if the group therapy was actually group therapy, not a group of teens just sharing among themselves, without adult supervision. Also, it seems more than a little flimsy to me that ‘love’ can help […]

Review: Now I Rise – Kiersten White

Review: Now I Rise – Kiersten White

Now I Rise took me on a fantastic trip through history and various countries, following Lada in her quest for power – on her own. Now I Rise is one of my favorite 2017 releases! There, now that’s out of the way, you have been warned that this review might not be as coherent as it could be, because I’m so happy about this book I just want to say : “Run and buy it! Then shut yourself in somewhere to read it!” That’s how good it is! Lada has grown up quite a bit, but now, she’s without Radu and Mehmed, and while she definitely wanted to have allies, they were not the best choice for her to win […]

Review: Sisters of Blood and Spirit – Kady Cross

Review: Sisters of Blood and Spirit – Kady Cross

Sisters of Blood and Spirit was both creepy at times and a bit sad, but more than that, it was a story about loyalty between sisters, no matter that one was dead and the other alive. And I’m kicking myself for not starting this book earlier There was a lot of action packed into the pages of Sisters of Blood and Spirit, and it was really good, too. Lark has a strong bond to her still-born sister, Wren, who lives as much in the real world as in the shadowlands. So much so that she was sent to a mental hospital for hearing voices – when all that happened was that she answered out loud when her sister was talking to […]

Audio Review: Starflight – Melissa Landers

Audio Review: Starflight – Melissa Landers

Starflight was a fast-paced and action filled space adventure with great characters and a fantastic storyline! Starflight was such an exciting, fast-paced space adventure I’m kicking myself for not listening to it sooner! The characters were all complex, and the overall storyline amazing. Fights, more than one climax, plus all the feels – I just fell completely for this one. The complexity of the storyline and the well fleshed out characters were the main reason I loved the story. I was amazed at how one of the characters started out as an antagonist – whom I detested! – and then, little by little, the character changed and became one of the protagonists and I cheered them on. The action is […]

Review: Legion – Julie Kagawa

Review: Legion – Julie Kagawa

Legion brought my favorite dragons and their struggles to a complete new level of epicness! The action and the final fight at the end gave me heart palpitations! Because of the way Soldier ended, I knew there would be some heartache in Legion, but I had no idea just how much! Ember, however, stepped up and took on all the responsibility she could – while staying true to herself and her beliefs. The plan Talon was putting into action was chilling to say the least, and I really didn’t think things would end well. Main feel was probably fear! After being captured by Talon, Ember learned that her own fate was supposed to be much bleaker than anything she could […]

Review: Soldier – Julie Kagawa

Review: Soldier – Julie Kagawa

Betrayal, pain, action, fights, loyalty, love, hope, strength… Soldier encompassed all of that, and more! With a skillfull pen, Kagawa gave me an amazing story with Soldier. My main feels were of excitement and suspense, with a dash of romance, and possibly regret as well. Ember was torn between her human and dragon side more than ever, and this involved her in a strangely addictive and comprehensible love triangle. The action was fast-paced, the past tense and third- or first-person narration from various characters’ perspective made sure that all sides of the war were intimately covered. There were more than one twist I never saw coming, and I was completely out of breath by the time Soldier was over. We […]
