Safe & Sexy #1 – Bare Essentials

Safe & Sexy #1

I’ve had the idea for a feature about safe sex for a long time, ever since I had my discussion post with the same name a long time ago! And finally, Safe & Sexy was born. It’s where I will share a quote from a story I have read, and where there is a lot of hotness and sexiness, but where they still take the time to be safe! It’s important to me to read books that make me dream, but I also want them to be somewhat realistic. And to me, characters seem realistic when they take care of themselves and their partner(s)! Safe sex is a great way to do so, and when an author includes a couple of lines to share that they are indeed using condoms, I am such a happy reader. And I think it’s sexy when both new and ‘old’ lovers show that they respect each other by getting that condom, and possibly making using it both safe & sexy, hot and fun.

If you want to participate with your very own Safe & Sexy quotes, go right ahead. The more the merrier, and maybe your quote will help me add a new book to my bloated TBR shelf 😉 One can never have enough books, right? If you want to take part, you can grab my amazing feature header, which was made by Silvia, you should check out her portfolio – she’s the one who has created my header and my blog features before, and I love her. Without further ado, here’s my Safe & Sexy quote for this week, it’s from Naturally Naught (Bare Essentials) by Jill Shalvis, and really, it is quite fitting that Shalvis starts this new feature for me – as I can’t remember any of her books where condoms aren’t mentioned!

Bare Essentials cover - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Naughty But Nice
by New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis
Lingerie model Cassie Tremaine Montgomery intends to have her revenge on the citizens of her hometown—starting with seducing the sheriff, Sean “Tag” Taggart. Tag, however, isn’t cooperating. He’s more than willing to set the sheets on fire with her, but he’s asking for more than just sizzling sex…. He knows Cassie’s not as tough as she pretends. And he knows she cares about him—even if she won’t admit it. So he’ll just turn up the heat until she concedes there’s more between them than this red-hot passion.

My Safe & Sexy quote:

“Tell me you have a condom.” “Actually, I have two.” “Thank God,” she said fervently. “But I don’t need them yet.” He used two fingers now. Around, in, around again, at just the right tempo, as if he knew her body better than she did. He reduced her world to those fingers and the havoc he’d created within her. Oh, yeah, one more time, just one more… but he stopped and dragged a pathetic whimper from her throat.
“Don’t worry, you’re going to come. Soon as I do what I’ve been dying to do.” He slid off her panties. Used  his fingers to spread her open to him […]
He smiled. “Hey.” “Condom,” she demanded. He laughed and surged up to his knees, pulling one out of the pocket of his pants. Pushing him to the sand, she grabbed the packet from him and opened it with her teeth. Spitting out the foil corner, she concentrated on her task, sucking in a breath at the feel of him, all hard, velvety steel in her hands.

Thanks for stopping by today. Don’t forget to include your Safe & Sexy post in the linky. Have a fantastic Friday and happy reading.

  1. Love it! I have cringed many times when the romance book couples have a short ten second ‘I’m clean? You?’ type of thing before diving in.
    Some authors manage to make the condom in the scene really work to heighten the passion, too.

    Sizzling quote there. 🙂

    And glad to get the background on your meme banner. I was admiring it before I even got to the post.

  2. I love that you’re doing something to spotlight safe sex in books! It’s disappointing, and disconcerting, that some people think it’s “unsexy.” You know what’s unsexy? Accidental pregnancies and STDs lol. I always like it when characters in books use condoms (or go get tested once they’re in a relationship so that they can stop using them, I read a book that did that once).

    • Yeah, I agree Kristen. I think it’s unsexy when people don’t really take care of themselves, either. And I’ve had people (in the real world) not think of STDs, only unwanted pregnancies, and it boggles the mind.
      Condoms first, then testing is exactly what I want in my books, and so I figured highlighting books where this happens could maybe help promote safe sex.

  3. Yay! This is a great feature, Lex. I appreciate safe sex in my sexy reads as well – and it really *can* be sexy, as demonstrated in your quote, to take the time to *ahem* cover up.
    I really like the feature header as well – everyone is represented! 😉 Are you going to make this a weekly feature? Monthly? Just when the mood strikes? I’ll have to try to remember to highlight Sexy & Safe quotes. 😉
    Happy Friday, wifey! I hope your day has been fabulous and I hope we can chat again soon! Miss you & love you!! {{{BIG HUGS}}}

    • I know you appreciate safe sex in your sexy reads. And I think making the condom-getting fun and sexy is a great way to promote safe sex everywhere 🙂 I am going to try to keep this feature weekly. I have a lot of books I can use for quotes, and my kindle is already filled with highlights 😀
      Love and miss you, too! {{{BIG HUGS}}}

  4. Aww!!!! <3 Every time you ask me for a feature header, I don't just get excited to design it, but also get thrilled for the feature!
    I knew this was a very good and original idea, you did great starting this! AND the quote you shared just proves what we were discussing further more. Being safe doesn't mean not being sexy, in fact, that quote just spices things up and makes the scene even sexier. Authors should never underestimate the power this has and the message behind it, which is quite important. I can't wait to read more Safe & Sexy quotes and discover new books to add to my TBR pile! I already wanted to try Jill Shalvis' books, you might just have pointed out where to start 😉

    • Thank you, Silvia!! I’m glad to have a feature where it helps us see that safe sex can be very hot indeed 🙂 That quote is a really good example, in my opinion. And I found so many I can use in the weeks to come, too 🙂
      I hope you’ll pick up a Shalvis book, they are really well done!

    Such a great feature Lexxie! I couldn’t agree more – unless my characters are supernatural and there’s no need for a condom, I want safe sex to come up. Not a quick, “I’m clean” but getting tested together and having that be a step in their relationship… a step that follows condom use.

    This scene sure made the condom sexy! How great – safe sex is sexy 😉

    Hugs!! Miss you 🙂

  6. Most of the books that I read are some sort of speculative fiction. Many of them, at least in the early books of the series, will explain away reasons why they don’t need condoms (shifter difficulties getting pregnant and resistant to diseases, etc). There are some that still use condoms. There’s also the books that I’ve read outside of the genre that do tackle this subject. Glad to see you calling this out.
