Sidekick Saturday #1 – All American

Sidekick Saturday - (un)Conventional BookviewsSidekick Saturday is a weekly meme hosted by Jaclyn at JC’s Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn’t have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in this week’s type
• Share a picture and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don’t include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick

This is my first participation in Sidekick Saturday, and I really need to make sure I check out Jaclyn’s post on FB on the Friday so I have a little time to think about my answer. An all-American sidekick isn’t that easy to find!

However, I think I’m going to go with Shane Collins from Rachel Caines Morganville Vampires series. The last book released in this series was Bitter Blood, and I loved how Shane had to struggle with a lot of things in it. Shane is Claire’s boyfriend, and is a very important side character – and I really love the way he treats Claire, and how protective he is of her. I’m not American, so I could be off the mark saying that Shane is the all-American sidekick – but he is how I imagine a healthy, young, American guy.

Some quotes about Shane that I absolutely love :

“Hell”, Shane spit in disgust. “I can’t hit a girl. Here, Claire. You hit her” He tossed her the bat.” (From Glass Houses – Book 1)

“Hey, Mikey? You get her hurt and I’ll end you.”
“You let anything happen to Eve and I’ll do the same,” Michael said. He’d just finished kissing Eve, too. “While you’re at it, don’t get yourself killed, either, bro.”
“Ditto. And don’t kiss me.”
Claire cocked her head at him, exasperated. “Seriously, Shane? Ditto? That’s the best you can do?”
Shane and Michael exchanged identical looks and shrugs. Guys.
“Let me show you idiots how it’s done,” Eve said, and hugged Claire fiercely. She kissed her on the cheek. “I love you, CB. Please take care of yourself, okay?”
“I love you, too,” Claire said, and suddenly her throat felt tight and her eyes burned with tears. “I really do.”
Shane and Michael watched them with identical expressions of blank bemusement, and finally Shane said, “So basically, it’s what I said. Ditto.” (From Ghost Town – Book 9)

“Marriage is a big word for all guys,” Shane said. “You know that. It’s kind of an allergy. We get itchy and sweaty just trying to spell it, much less do it.” (From Last Breath – Book 11)

“Jackass!” Eve yelled.
“You know, when people say that, I just hear the word awesome,” Shane said.” (From Last Breath – Book 11)

I don’t have a picture of how I think Shane looks like, and I’m not as artistic as Jaclyn is, so I can’t draw him myself – but now you know who my all-American sidekick is 🙂

  1. Fantastic choice!! I realized after posting the theme that ‘All-American’ should have been phrased differently because most of you participating are actually from other countries. Definitely one of the things I love about book blogging is meeting you all from places that I have never been close to.

I think Shane is an excellent choice for this one. He is the epitome of male teen boy and I really enjoy reading about Claire and him. The last few have been pretty hard. Thank you so much for participating! I’ll make next week’s theme easier 😀

    • No, don’t make it too easy, Jaclyn! 😛 I just need to remember to check your FB page on Friday, so I have time to think before I write my post!

And thanks for liking my choice – I love Shane and Claire together – he truly is the teenage boy to a ‘T’!

    • mmm Jackal!

I haven’t read The Hollows or Cinder yet, but both are pretty far up on my TBr.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you’re having a good weekend.
