Sidekick Saturday #5 – Bad Turned Good
Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC’s Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn’t have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in this week’s type
• Share a picture (if possible) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don’t include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• Put your link in the Linky thing and comment
This week, Jaclyn has chosen a side character who started out bad, then became good.
When I first saw this question, I thought it would be easy-peasy to answer it! However, it has taken me quite a bit of thinking. Now, though, I think I have the perfect bad turned good sidekick to talk about 🙂 However, there is no way I can do this without spoilers, so if you haven’t read Eternity Cure yet, you should stop reading this post right now!
*** SPOILERS AHEAD!!***
*** CONTINUE ONLY IF YOU HAVE ALREADY READ THE BLOOD OF EDEN SERIES, OR IF YOU DON’T MIND IF YOU ARE SPOILED!***
My sidekick bad turned good is Jackal! I am not completely sure he’s actually good now, but he seems to be less bad than he was in the beginning of the Blood of Eden series. He started out a character I totally loathed, both because of the way he treated Allie and Zeke in The Immortal Rules, he acted like a total jackass, and I thought his name – Jackal – was so apropos it was not even funny! Here are some quotes so you know what I mean :
But as I drew back, preparing to hurry after Zeke, Jackal raised gleaming yellow eyes over the crowd and caught my stare. He blinked as our eyes met, a puzzled expression crossing his face, and then I was out the door, following Zeke into the dark corridor. (From The Immortal Rules)
“Well, well,” Jackal purred, smiling as he came into the room, shutting the door behind him. “What do we have here? Another vampire has snuck into my little kingdom, I see. I thought I felt something odd tonight. Suddenly, all the craziness outside makes sense.” (From The Immortal Rules)
“Come on, sister, why are you so concerned about one human? They’re food, bloodbags. We were meant to rule over the human race […]” (From The Immortal Rules)
“I’m going to have to kill you now.” “Then stop talking,” I challenged, sinking into a ready stance, “and get on with it. The sun is going to be up soon.” Jackal bared his fangs, and his golden eyes flashed. “Oh, trust me, sister. This won’t take long at all.” (From The Immortal Rules)
“Why would he do this?” I whispered. “Sarren doesn’t need a reason for what he does.” Jackal curled a lip in disgust. “He and his sanity parted ways a while back, and he’s only gotten more deranged since. But this…” (From The Eternity Cure)
“And probably very pissed at you,” Jackal added unhelpfully. “But I don’t think he’ll be back tonight. With that wound, he’ll have to feed soon, and he’s made it slightly difficult for himself with all the crazies outside.” (From The Eternity Cure)
I think the fact that I’m still not sure if Jackal is good or bad is partly why I chose him – because he can be anything he wants. The savior or the betrayer, the friend or the enemy, the brother or the butcher. And he has the funniest lines ever! Even when he is mean (or pretending to be) he’s got so many funny lines!
What about you? Who is your sidekick this week? Is it someone who made a full 180°, or someone who was slightly bad and then went to be a little better?
Thanks for stopping by today, have a spectacular Saturday and a wonderful weekend 🙂
Oh, goodness, I couldn’t read your sidekick either. So many books on my list! Happy Reading!
LOL, so sorry about that, Robyn! I was thinking and thinking yesterday, and this was the one I ended up deciding on – because so many things happened…
Thanks for stopping by to comment, even if you couldn’t really read my post 🙂

Wow – what you said about not really knowing his true nature yet and the fact that he can be anything is so true. He was sooo bad in the first one, then you’re thinking right along with Allie, “ok is he really that bad?”. I love his character in this series. His lines do have to be the best! Yeah, he really is something, isn’t he? I really look forward to the next book in this series, it’s so well written, and all of the characters have some depth to them.
The ending of Eternity Cure was heartbreaking, though.
Thanks for stopping by, Jaclyn, I hope your weekend is excellent!

Lexxie..I am loving Jackal at the moment. He is to me a conflicted character. He is by nature a selfish creature, perhaps because the world has forced him to be so, he is also a loner and as he is forced into interacting with the other characters his softer side, despite his best intentions are slipping through and I love it!!
YAY, I’m glad I’m not alone in loving this utterly twisted and selfish character 🙂 And you’re right, in some of his interactions with Allie, he truly sounded very bitter about how his relationship with Kanin had developed from the very start.
Thanks for stopping by 🙂
I should have read yours first lol I have Jackel too. 🙂

I saw that, Jodie, and I thought it was great! And we didn’t even pick the same quotes 😀
I love it when bad characters show more depth!
I agree 🙂 And often, the bad characters are very interesting, because they have that extra layer of ‘badness’ to them 🙂
Jackal sounds like a very interesting character, Lexxie! I only skimmed because I haven’t read this series yet and I do plan on it – but I like the fact that you couldn’t decide whether he’s good or bad. And I love when authors let their “bad” characters provide humor too.
Hope you’re having a lovely weekend, Lexxie!
Thanks for stopping by, Brandee 🙂 I did have a good weekend, and hopefully, spring/summer will finally arrive this week. If it does, this week will be awesome, too!
