Sidekick Showcase - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC’s Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn’t have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Saturday, and so will Jaclyn, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on Jaclyn’s page. Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in the week’s topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don’t include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post their’s throughout the week as well

Sidekick Showcase #17 – Living Dead

This week’s theme is the living dead, and I have to admit I have thought a lot about this, because I wanted to feature a book or a series I haven’t talked about in a while, either because it’s been a while since a new book was released, or just because, you know, I’ve been a tiny bit obsessed with The Hollows series.

So, for the living dead sidekick showcase, I have chosen Jim Butcher’s series The Dresden Files and the character who is an awesome living dead sidekick is Thomas Raith…who is a vampire from the white court. In this series, there are four courts of vampires, and they prey on humans in different ways, the white court prey on love, the red court on blood and I can’t remember what the black court preys on… but it isn’t pretty. So since there is a different take on vampires as well, I thought I’d share. It’s also a urban fantasy / paranormal series I really enjoy. Written by a man, and with a male main character it’s quite different from the other series I read in this genre, and it’s really refreshing to read a male point of view sometimes.

Thomas doesn’t really enjoy to make humans suffer because he needs their love, and it’s possible for him to actually love someone in return. He is often beating himself up because of what and who he is, and that’s something I can appreciate. When he has to do things to survive, he does them, though, survival of the fittest and all. Do you want some quotes? Of course you do! Here we go.

From Dead Beat:

“We are not going to die.”
Butters stared up at me, pale, his eyes terrified. “We’re not?”
No. And do you know why?” He shook his head. “Because Thomas is too pretty to die. And because I’m too stubborn to die.” I hauled on the shirt even harder. “And most of all because tomorrow is Oktoberfest, Butters, and polka will never die.”

“I’m so pretty, it’s hard for me to think of myself as intelligent.”

“Now I feel like James Bond. Suave and intelligent, breaking all the codes while looking fabulous.”

From Blood Rites:

“Christ, Dresden! You almost got me killed!”
“Don’t be a baby. You’re fine.”
Thomas frowned at me. “You at least could have told me!”
“I did tell you,” I said. “I told you at Mac’s that I’d give you a ride home, but that I had to run an errand first.”
Thomas scowled. “An errand is getting a tank of gas or picking up a carton of milk or something. It is not getting chased by flying purple pyromaniac gorillas hurling incendiary poo.”

“Thomas was an annoying wiseass who tended to make everyone he met want to kill him, and when I have that much in common with someone, I can’t help but like him a little.”

From Cold Days:

Thomas opened the throttle all the way and passed me, I kid you not, a shiny brass telescope.
“Seriously?” I asked him.
“Ever since those pirate movies came out, they’re everywhere,” he said. “I’ve got a sextant, too.”
“Any tent you have is a sex tent,” I muttered darkly, extending the telescope.
Thomas smirked.

“Karrin, eh?” Thomas asked.
I nodded. “She’s real serious about order. A man dying, she can understand. A man coming back. That’s different.”
“Isn’t she Catholic?” Thomas asked. “Don’t they have a guy?”

Molly blinked, then looked at Thomas and said, “Wait a minute…. We’re his flunkies.”
“You, may be,” Thomas said, sneering. “I’m his thug. I’m way higher than a flunky.”
“You are high if you think I’m taking any orders from you,” Molly said tartly

Thanks for stopping by 🙂 Have a spectacular Saturday and a wonderful weekend.

  1. *gasps* Thomas sounds like a character I need to get to know, Lexxie. This is a series I’ve always intended to read (I feel like I say this a lot – and I KNOW book #1 is on my nook…) I’m very intrigued by the different take on vampires – you know I like that, no? And I’m so thankful you included the quotes because I can see the humor too! 🙂 I simply must know more about the ‘flying purple pyromaniac gorillas hurling incendiary poo’! LOL Awesome pick!

I hope you have a fabulous Saturday planned, my dear! *hugs*

  2. LOL, yes, there is a pretty dry humor I love in the Dresden Files 🙂 So far, there are 14 books out, I think… and I patiently wait for the next one to come out soonish 🙂

You should really read the first book, and then, we’ll check if any of the books are lendable via the kindle library.

Thanks for stopping by Brandee. Today, we’re going to our 11-year-old’s hockey game, then back home. Possibly a BBQ tonight, if the weather holds.

I hope you’ll have a wonderful Saturday as well! *hugs*

  3. I have this series on my to-read list. I really think that I would enjoy it. Especially after all the tidbits you’ve shared with us today. Those different vampire houses sound so interesting! I love when an author spins their own tale on old classic supernatural creatures. Love the sound of Thomas, I think I would enjoy him as well 😀 Great quotes! Have a fantastic weekend!!! • Jaclyn, I’m sure you’ll enjoy The Dresden files, the magic using is a little different as well. And I agree with you, it’s always interesting when an author successfully spins a new tale on vampires. Thomas is awesome. And funny. And sexy 😉

Thanks for stopping by, have a wonderful Sunday.

    • It’s a really good series, actually, Naomi, and it’s right up your alley as well 🙂

Have a wonderful week. Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Your quotes forced me to click on my library’s ebook catalog and there they were. I added them to my wish list. Maybe I won’t like the first book and I won’t have another dozen books added to my TBR list with one Sidekick post. Sheesh. I love the too pretty to be smart quote. I mean that is totally me. hehe. Great pick, Lexxie!!

    • LOL Robyn, I’m always happy when it’s not only me who keeps adding more books to the TBR pile thanks to these Sidekick posts! And I think you’ll enjoy the Dresden Files. I’m not sure if there’s a lot of Thomas in the first one, but there’s certainly lots of action.

Oh, I think you’re both pretty and smart, Robyn, don’t sell yourself short!

Thanks for stopping by 😀 *hugs*
