Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday is a bookish meme, hosted by Jaclyn at JC’s Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn’t have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Saturday, and so will Jaclyn, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on Jaclyn’s page. Just do the following:
• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in the week’s topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don’t include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post their’s throughout the week as well
Sidekick Showcase #39 – Smaller than Usual
When I saw that one of the topics for the February Sidekick Showcase was Favorite Smaller than Usual Character, guess who just popped straight into my mind? Yup. Jenks from Kim Harrison’s The Hollows series, of course 🙂 He is small, but he sure packs a punch. He is loyal to a fault, always ready to help Rachel and Ivy, and he has some of the funniest one-liners ever!!
As usual, my drawing skills aren’t good enough for me to show you what I think Jenks looks like, but imagine a real hunk in a small size, with pixy-dust on his wings, and a mouth that definitely should be washed out every now and then 😉
From Dead Witch Walking:
“You bet your Granny’s panties I will”
“Bug? You sack of sweat stink. I’ve got farts that smell sweeter than you. Think you’re better than me? Poop ice cream cones, do you? Call me a bug! Rachel, let me do him now.”
“Tink’s a Disney whore’
Jenks darted to hover three inches before Ivy’s nose. His wings were red in anger. “You have a gardener trap you in a glass ball and see if it doesn’t give you a new outlook on life, Little Miss Merry Sunshine.”
My bad mood slipped away as I watched a four-inch pixy confront a vamp
“Slicker than snot on a door handle.”
Jenks made a face as he levered himself up on the sill. “Much as I enjoy this horrific outpouring of estrogen, I’m going to go say good-bye to my wife. Let me know when you’re ready. I’ll be in the garden—probably next to the stink weed.”
Yeah, so all of these quotes are just from the very first book, and Jenks never lets up – between the comic relief and his fierce loyalty, he’s the bestest of the smaller than usual characters there is 🙂
Ha, I love that you picked Jenks! His swearing is the best. I can learn some really good ones from him
I miss Jenks and the gang! I’m slowly adding all the audiobooks to my collection so I can rediscover it 🙂

Jenks is the best sidekick of all time!! I miss him already. I will be doing a relisten to this series in the near future. I can already see it coming.
I’m going to listen to this series, too, Melanie! It’s the best 🙂
Jenks is an awesome choice. His little family crack me up in the series so much. Drunk Jenks may be my favorite Jenks. 😀
Jenks drunk on honey is definitely something, Matt 🙂 thanks for stopping by!
Ah Jenks!! I just love him. The description you gave of him is spot-on, and he definitely does need his mouth washed out. His Tink lines are just hilarious. Thanks so much for sharing 😀 I hope you’re week is fantastic!!
Jenks is just the best, I miss him so much, Jaclyn!! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
I love Jenks! My family know all about him and I’ve only read a few of the Hollows books. He’s one of the all time neatest characters. All that attitude and love for his family and orneriness when insulted. Good stuff. Also, I love that he’s hot. Sometimes he has the worst attitude and he’s not always the best influence on Rachel and he’s a dad of a million little guys, and he’s super hot. I’ll stop now. Great pick, Lexxie!
Yeah, Jenks is all of that, Robyn. I love how gruff he can be, and how he is never afraid or backing down, especially when it comes to Ivy 🙂
Have a great weekend!
